After months of criticism, Firaxis has a plan for Civilization 7. Devs test one of the most requested features: playing with a single civilization

Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 is gradually removing a key feature that originally made it stand out from previous games in the series.

If you were following news about Civilization VII before it launched, you might have heard about a planned system for changing civilizations. The idea was that as you progressed through the ages, you’d get to choose a new nation to play as. This was designed to address a common problem in past Civilization games – players often got bored at the end and would start a new game instead of continuing.

A big change and free pirate DLC

The developers explained their reasoning behind the new system, but many players remain unconvinced. To address this, Ed Beach, the lead designer, announced that Firaxis is adding a feature that lets players complete the game with a single civilization without interruption.

The creator hasn’t shared many details yet, but the team is testing a new feature and will soon involve players in the process. They’re launching the Firaxis Feature Workshop, where a select group of players will be invited over the next few months to try out new ideas for Civilization 7 and give the developers their thoughts.

The developer also announced details for update 1.3.0, launching on November 3rd. This update will heavily feature naval battles, adding a new unit, building, and resource, along with numerous improvements to sea combat and resource management. There will also be some changes to the user interface, gameplay adjustments, and further balancing of the game.

I’m so excited! Tomorrow, the new Tides of Power DLC finally drops, and the best part is, it’s free until January 5th! It’s coming in two parts, with the second one arriving in December. After the free period ends, you’ll be able to purchase the add-ons individually if you want to play as Captain Edward Teach and lead the Pirate Republic – a whole new civilization!

While players are happy about the upcoming free downloadable content, they have mixed feelings about the new feature. Some dislike the current system, though others enjoy it. Many think the core idea is good, but the execution needs work. Others believe the feature misses the mark entirely and is alienating longtime fans of the Civilization series, who feel Civ 7 is losing what makes it Civilization.
