After Midnight’s Plan to Fix America Won Late Night This Week

As a lifelong fan who’s seen more late-night shows than I care to admit, I can confidently say that this week has been a rollercoaster of emotions. First off, Angelina Jolie graced our screens on The Tonight Show, reminding us all why we fell in love with her during the Girl, Interrupted/Tomb Raider days. It’s like she never left!

Before we get into the top-five late-night clips, three things feel of note this week:

➽ Angelina Jolie recently appeared on late-night television again, marking a return that she claims has been at least ten years. She graced the stage of The Tonight Show without shoes, discussed her near career as a funeral director, and exuded the honest and endearing charm we all adored during the press tours for Girl, Interrupted and Tomb Raider.

➽ Two separate comedy shows, The Daily Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, unexpectedly made jokes about O.J. Simpson. Could it be because it’s the 30th anniversary of his murder, he passed away for most of the year, or are their writers following the Norm Macdonald Joke of the Day account like I am? Multiple possibilities exist.

Originally, this event transpired last week; however, it wasn’t published on Black Friday, hence we’re discussing it today: The final episode of Busy This Week featured an intriguing tale from Stephen Colbert about getting drunk with Dakota Johnson on his show. However, it seems the narrative might have been centered around Jennifer Lawrence instead. As with all stories involving Dakota Johnson, the specifics are hazy and serve to fuel further speculation. Nonetheless, the core message is that late-night programs should host more parties. They make for great television.

Now let’s talk heehees and hahas for this week in late night.

Seth Meyers in the Hot Seat

Seth Meyers is exceptionally skilled as an interviewer due to his ability to adapt easily. It’s intriguing to see him accept the “Colbert Questionert” since flexibility and being enjoyable company can sometimes be a disadvantage. Big, firm stances are crucial, and one must stick by them. While Meyers’ responses are excellent, the real joy lies in watching him fully embody the spirit of “A Delight to Have in Class” with Colbert. Additionally, his joke about being the only child at a Temptations concert is particularly amusing.

Kyle Mooney’s Triumphant Return to Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The entire conversation exudes an aura of Homegrown Success, in the most endearing manner possible. Previously, Kyle Mooney was a regular contributor to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, so his comeback as a prominent film director offers Kimmel an opportunity to revel in the talent he had recognized early on. It’s such a heartwarming sight. Moreover, Mooney even brought a drink along, which is fantastic. As we have previously mentioned this week, imbibing during late-night shows adds to the charm and should be appreciated.

3.
Stephen Colbert’s Daniel Craig Impression

Stephen Colbert expressed interest in joining Knives Out 4, an idea that’s certainly worth considering given his talent for ensemble work. He’s absolutely the right fit! When Daniel Craig asked if he could do any accents, you could see Colbert brainstorming, and it was clear when he chose a pirate voice as his response. It was absurd yet delightful, a brilliant choice. Being an avid fan of Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, I can’t help but appreciate Colbert’s unusual vocal impressions. Top-notch entertainment!

2.
Ralph Fiennes Is Hateful and Miserable on WWHL

https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=f6Hm5FxsLM0

Ralph Fiennes and Stephanie Hsu reenacted the Angie K./Meredith Marks confrontation from the “RHOSLC” lunch scene at “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” and let me tell you, Fiennes really delved into his performance. It’s clear he doesn’t quite understand the situation, but he delivers the lines with such conviction. His Meredith Marks portrayal is far more perplexed than the original character, which surprisingly makes her seem more relatable rather than the haughty demeanor she usually adopts. Meredith Marks, pay attention to this performance.

Josh Thomas Comes for Big Paper

On the late-night talk show “After Midnight,” Josh Thomas, an Australian turned American, criticized America’s reliance on paper records, pointing out that for a digitally advanced country, there are far too many important pieces of paper. He noted the absurdity of having to retrieve registration documents from the glove compartment when dealing with overly aggressive American police officers. The irony of his anti-paper rant occurring while he was struggling with an extension cord is another layer of humor we’ve come to associate with “After Midnight.” Thanks, CBS. (This version maintains the original’s tone and essence while using more natural and easy-to-read language.)
