The season finales of the One Chicago shows were very moving this past spring. Chicago Fire ended its 13th season with particularly emotional performances from Taylor Kinney and Miranda Rae Mayo, as Stella revealed to Severide that she was expecting a baby. After seeing them work through so many challenges to become parents, it was a satisfying conclusion. However, things on Chicago Fire don’t usually stay easy for long. As we look ahead to the Season 14 premiere in the 2025 TV schedule, executive producer Andrea Newman has shared that things will be “very complicated” for Kidd specifically when it comes to her pregnancy and becoming a parent.
The fourteenth season of Chicago Fire begins with an episode titled “Kicking Down Doors,” which will premiere on NBC on Wednesday, October 1 at its regular time. It will air between Chicago Med and Chicago P.D. (Viewers can also watch it the next day with a subscription to Peacock.) The episode’s brief description gives us a hint of what to expect, though it doesn’t mention anything about the relationship between Stella and Kelly.
The arrival of a new member at Firehouse 51 creates some friction, and increasing disorder in the city presents fresh difficulties for the team. Herrmann is hesitant about handing over his office to Mouch.
Don’t worry about Stella and Severide being left out of the episode description – Chicago Fire usually doesn’t reveal what’s going to happen to its characters. The mention of a “new face at Firehouse 51” likely refers to Sal Vasquez, a new firefighter played by Brandon Larracuente (who you may recognize from On Call). He’s joining the team to replace Sam Carver, following Jake Lockett’s departure.
As a longtime fan, I’ve been *really* curious about Stella Kidd and that baby at the end of Season 13! I actually got a chance to ask showrunner Andrea Newman about what we can expect. It’s been a while since Fire showed us firefighters navigating a pregnancy – the last time was with Dawson and Casey, if you remember! During NBC’s One Chicago press day before Season 14 started, Newman gave us a little preview:
As a supporter, I think it was really tough for Kidd heading into this, because she was already dealing with a lot of worries and challenges. What we really wanted to show is how she had all these hesitations, especially about how it would impact her career. She was constantly thinking about how it would affect her work and life. But then, when it actually happened, a lot of those fears just disappeared, and it all became about family and her kids. It’s been amazing seeing her transition from all those early concerns to actually being a parent and a firefighter, and we’re really excited to explore that journey. It’s a powerful shift.
Having a baby has always held different significance for Stella and Severide, a fact he recognized right away when he suggested they start planning for parenthood in Season 13. She would be the one needing to step back from her demanding job as a firefighter, and they initially avoided that challenge by deciding to adopt. However, then they discovered they were expecting, creating a understandably complex situation for the Truck 81 lieutenant.
During a recent interview with the press, when questioned about how much trouble she planned for Stella and Severide in Season 14, the show’s creator hinted:
Life can be challenging, and being a parent is rarely easy. It often feels like a constant effort. We tend to create complications and unexpected problems – but with good intentions.
Over the years, the firefighters of Firehouse 51 who’ve become parents have experienced both joy and heartbreak. Dawsey faced a tragic loss with her pregnancy, while Cruz and Chloe happily adopted Javi and later welcomed baby Otis. Casey had to relocate across the country to care for the Darden boys, and Brett eventually joined him after adopting a baby herself. Will Stellaride’s path resemble the difficult journeys of Dawson and Casey, the happiness of Otis and Chloe, or something completely different?
For now, take a look at the trailer for One Chicago’s return:
Chicago Fire Season 14 will begin airing on Wednesday, October 1 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. It will be shown between Season 11 of Chicago Med at 8 p.m. ET and Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET. If you’d like a refresher on how the last season ended before the new season starts, the finale episode is currently available to stream on Peacock.
