Disappointed about having two main characters in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows? Ubisoft isn’t planning to move away from this idea for future games, as long as it makes sense for the story.
More dual protagonists
The announcement of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows caused a lot of conversation among fans, particularly about the character Yasuke, though some players also weren’t impressed with Naoe. In an interview with GamesRadar+, the game’s associate director, Simon Lemay-Comtois, acknowledged that the characters have received a mixed reaction from the community.
Having two main characters can be tricky, and people often have strong, sometimes unexpected, preferences. It’s not always about which character’s storyline is more appealing – sometimes viewers simply prefer spending time with one character over the other. We saw this with games like Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, and we anticipated a similar reaction with Naoe and Yasuke. We knew it might divide our audience, but we accepted that risk.
Despite all the controversy, Ubisoft stands by its choices. According to Lemay-Comtois, the studio has no regrets and plans to continue developing games featuring dual protagonists.
We’ve learned that making games with two main characters could work well, but only if it makes sense for the story and the game’s world.
The creator didn’t respond to the feedback about Yasuke, a character who received the most criticism in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Many players felt a Black samurai didn’t quite fit the game’s historical Japanese setting. Hopefully, if the developers create another game with two main characters in the future, they’ll be a better match for the world they inhabit.
