After 27 Years, HBO’s Crime Thriller Has Aged Like Fine Wine

This acclaimed crime thriller, available on HBO Max, remains as captivating as ever. Widely considered a television masterpiece and a major influence on modern TV, it’s a perfect show to binge-watch on HBO Max.

As a total film and TV buff, I’ve seen a lot, and honestly, this series, which first came out way back in 1999, still holds up incredibly well. It’s one of those rare shows that doesn’t feel dated at all, and I think it actually improves with time. Some might even say it’s better to discover it now than when it was originally airing over its six seasons.

The Sopranos Remains A Top Show Of All Time

It’s no surprise that The Sopranos continues to be a fantastic show. Often credited with launching the recent era of high-quality television – alongside hits like Mad Men and Breaking Bad – it’s arguably even more enjoyable to watch today, in 2026. The show’s strong performances, compelling story, and excellent writing are enhanced by a layer of nostalgia, making it a truly binge-worthy experience.

You’d think a TV show often hailed as the best ever might lose its appeal, especially now when streaming services prioritize lots of content and keeping viewers hooked over truly high-quality, carefully made shows. But that hasn’t happened with The Sopranos. In fact, it’s gotten even better over time, much like a fine wine – a fitting comparison considering Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini, frequently enjoyed a good glass throughout the series.

HBO Needs To Make A Sopranos Spin-Off Show

HBO and Warner Bros. have been exploring ways to revisit the world of The Sopranos for a while now. In 2021, they released a prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, which was generally well-received. The film starred Michael Gandolfini, the son of the late James Gandolfini, as a young Tony Soprano, and also featured strong performances from actors like Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, and Ray Liotta.

The 2025 two-part documentary Wise Guy: David Chase and the Sopranos was highly praised by critics. However, given HBO’s current approach to its biggest shows, like Game of Thrones, there’s potential for more. While a direct sequel that resolves the famous cliffhanger ending might not be the answer, HBO Max could benefit from a new, compelling mob drama in the spirit of The Sopranos.

If Netflix were to buy Warner Bros., it’s likely they’d immediately focus on iconic shows like The Sopranos and The Wire, potentially developing new projects based on them. While a full reboot, similar to what they’re doing with Harry Potter, would likely upset many fans, there’s probably a spinoff idea that would appeal to dedicated Sopranos viewers.
