Even twenty years after its debut, the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is still expanding in exciting and surprising ways. Though the original show ended in 2008, the story continues through books, comics, and spin-offs that delve into the lives of both well-known characters and those we didn’t see as much of before.
Fans have been asking for this for years, and now they’re getting it: a story that delves into the backstory of Jet, a memorable and tragic character from Avatar: The Last Airbender. According to Collider, a new graphic novel titled Avatar: The Last Airbender – Jet: Rebels and Rhinos will be released on September 8, 2026, offering an emotional prequel that explores the beginnings of the Freedom Fighters and their leader.
Jet’s Untold Origin Finally Comes to Light
Jet’s time on the animated series was short, but he made a lasting impression. He was introduced as the charismatic leader of a rebel group in the Earth Kingdom, and he stood out because he was both likable and morally complex. His journey towards becoming a better person, and his tragic ending, left viewers eager to learn more about his past.
This new graphic novel explores the difficult experiences that haunted Jet before he met Aang and his friends. Years earlier, his home village was destroyed by Colonel Mongke and his powerful Fire Nation soldiers, the Rough Rhinos. This tragic event drives Jet’s desire for revenge and ultimately leads him to create the Freedom Fighters.
The story focuses on the damaging effects of being consumed by revenge, rather than glorifying it. A young character, Jet, tries to gather others who have experienced similar pain, and in doing so, he’s forced to grapple with the conflict between seeking justice and protecting the new, close-knit group he’s creating. Expect a deep dive into the characters’ emotions, combined with the exciting action the franchise is known for.
Faith Erin Hicks, a returning artist familiar with the series, and illustrator Peter Wartman are teaming up with Avatar Studios to create the book. They’ve worked on the comic series before and are known for staying true to the original story’s spirit while also adding new depth and feeling.
A Massive Year Ahead for the Avatar Universe
The new series comes at an exciting time for the world of Avatar. Netflix is continuing its live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Season 2 will build on the story and introduce the character Toph to a new audience. With Season 3 already filmed, it’s clear Netflix has confidence in the show’s future.
The world of Avatar is expanding with a new animated movie! The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will take place between the original series and The Legend of Korra, showing what happened with Team Avatar as adults when they faced a dangerous new enemy connected to a powerful, ancient source.
Lauren Montgomery directed this project, which was created by the original creators of the series, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It shows a careful and thoughtful continuation of the existing story, featuring a new cast of voice actors and a plot that connects different time periods. The project aims to expand on the established lore and enrich the overall mythology.
As a huge fan, I truly believe 2026 is going to be an incredible year for Avatar: The Last Airbender! And honestly, what I’m most excited about is finally getting Jet’s backstory. It’s amazing to me that after 21 years, there are still new stories to tell in this world, and it’s clear so many of us are eager to revisit it.
