In 2023, Universal and Blumhouse had a winning formula with several films. A standout success was the sci-fi horror movie M3GAN, which proved popular enough to earn a sequel released in 2025.
Although M3GAN was defeated in the 2023 movie, she’s back and more powerful in the sequel. Surprisingly, she’s now working with the people she originally tried to harm, and the film portrays her as a sophisticated, almost James Bond-like character. Despite a disappointing theatrical release this summer, M3GAN 2.0 is now a worldwide success, according to FlixPatrol.
The sci-fi comedy M3GAN 2.0 is already a huge success on streaming! It quickly became the most popular movie on HBO Max in seven Asian countries – including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines – just days after its release on December 27th. It’s also performing very well on Prime Video in Brazil, climbing the charts there.
Critics weren’t impressed with the sequel, giving it a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences enjoyed it more with an 81% score. The first film actually received better reviews, with a 93% approval rating from critics and 78% from viewers.
The recent movie M3GAN 2.0 didn’t do as well in theaters as its predecessor. While it earned $39 million, that wasn’t enough to turn a profit, though it did cover its $25 million production cost. The first M3GAN film was a big hit, earning $181.7 million on a $12 million budget.
The film’s producer explained they initially believed M3GAN was incredibly flexible as a character. They thought they could easily adapt her to different genres, timeframes, or even change her from a villain to a hero. However, they realized they underestimated how strongly audiences connected with the original concept.
M3GAN 2.0 Is Heading to Netflix
Following a disappointing performance in theaters in late September, the movie—distributed by Universal Pictures—won’t be available on Prime Video as expected. Instead, it will stream on a different platform.
According to What’s on Netflix, M3GAN 2.0 will be available to stream on Netflix in the U.S. starting Monday, January 26, 2026. Netflix secured the rights to show it first, rather than Amazon.
M3GAN 2.0 is streaming on Peacock.
