The Sherlock Holmes stories are not slowing down anytime soon.
According to Deadline, Chris Cornwell and Oliver Lansley are creating a TV series focused on James Moriarty, the notorious villain from the Sherlock Holmes stories. The show is being produced by Fremantle and Archery Pictures, and is currently titled ‘Moriarty.’ As of now, it doesn’t have a home on any specific TV network or streaming platform.
The upcoming Moriarty series is described as a fresh take on crime dramas, focusing on the most well-known villain in detective stories. The show, if produced, will center on a character who is a Professor of Criminal Psychology at Durham University, but secretly leads a double life as the brilliant mind behind complex crimes across Northern England.
Although Sherlock Holmes won’t be involved, Professor Moriarty will face a new criminal adversary who starts attacking his criminal network. This forces Moriarty to reluctantly team up with the police, working as a consultant to take down his enemy while concealing his true identity. Detective Imogen Burrows, a reserved detective from Yorkshire, will also play a key role, forming a powerful partnership with Moriarty. However, Moriarty will soon discover that Imogen’s growing suspicions pose a greater danger than the rival gang he’s fighting.
The number of episodes for the upcoming TV series is still unknown, and no actors have been cast yet. Fremantle is currently seeking a network to broadcast the show.
Over the years, many different actors have played Sherlock Holmes’s rival, Moriarty, in films and TV series. The prequel series Young Sherlock currently features Dónal Finn as Moriarty, showing how his relationship with Sherlock – played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin – began.
