AdHoc Studio is celebrating a major success with their game, Dispatch, selling over one million copies in its first ten days. The game is being praised for delivering the kind of story-driven experience many players have missed since Telltale Games faced difficulties. While Telltale has returned and announced a sequel to The Wolf Among Us, updates have been scarce. Recently, AdHoc Studio co-founder Pierre Shorett spoke with Inverse about The Wolf Among Us 2, revealing that he and his team worked on the project when they were still employed at Telltale Games.
Dispatch is filling the void for narrative episodic games
AdHoc Studio was founded by four developers who previously worked at Telltale Games, and their debut title is a game called Dispatch. Despite advice to the contrary, they chose to release it as an episodic series. The game’s popularity proves how much players have been wanting story-focused games like this one.
What’s the current status of The Wolf Among Us 2? It was initially revealed at The Game Awards in 2019, and it’s been almost six years since then. Telltale assures fans the game hasn’t been cancelled, but it didn’t launch in its planned 2023 timeframe. A major factor in the delay appears to be a shift from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, requiring significant rework. However, the project seems to have stalled, particularly because developers from AdHoc had already contributed to the game’s script before leaving Telltale. As they explained in a recent interview:
To be clear, we’re not currently developing ‘The Wolf Among Us 2.’ We did work on it for about two years, but as far as I know, Telltale is still trying to make it happen. Honestly, I don’t have any more information than what’s already public.
Of course, we’d love to see our script produced. But since it’s not our project, we’re eagerly waiting to find out what happens, just like everyone else.
As a big fan, I think Dispatch really proves how much people want games like this – it’s awesome to see something fill a gap in the market that’s been missing for so long! I was really interested to hear Pierre Shorette from AdHoc talk about how the gaming industry can be a little too cautious, and how that can sometimes hold back really creative stories. But he seemed genuinely thrilled with how Dispatch has been received, and especially excited that it’s introducing a whole new group of players to the joy of narrative-focused games. It makes me proud to see them getting that experience, and it’s cool that Dispatch is helping to make it happen.

Now that we’ve finished playing Dispatch and are feeling a little sad it’s over, many fans are wondering what comes next. The developers are considering a second season, but an official announcement is likely still a ways off. They’ve also made it clear they’re committed to using real actors and original storytelling, believing that AI can’t replicate genuine human creativity.
