Adam Sandler Reveals What Would Have Happened If He Hadn’t Become a Comedian

During a recent awards ceremony, Adam Sandler joked about what his life might have been like if he hadn’t become an actor. He suggested he’d likely be working with his father, and playfully noted that he’d at least know how to charge his own phone – a funny line from his acceptance speech.

Adam Sandler expressed immense gratitude for his career while accepting the Chairman’s Award at the Palm Springs International Film Awards. He’s currently promoting his new Netflix film, Jay Kelly, which also stars George Clooney and Laura Dern. After acknowledging Dern for presenting the award, Sandler shared a funny story about his father’s initial reaction to his choice of becoming a comedian and what might have happened if he hadn’t succeeded.

Like most actors, my parents weren’t thrilled when I told them I wanted to pursue acting. I earned a writing degree in college—a Bachelor of Fine Arts—and my father surprisingly said he was proud and encouraged me to give acting a try for a year. He told me to follow my dream and see if I could make it work, with the understanding that I’d join his electrical contracting business if it didn’t pan out. The only problem was, I knew next to nothing about electricity or construction.

Sandler playfully imagines what his life would be like if he’d followed in his father’s footsteps. He jokes that instead of a Hawaiian vacation, he’d be swimming in a potentially radioactive pond, though at least he’d have a glowing physique! He adds that he likely wouldn’t have the same possessions, like his current wardrobe or Cadillac – or if he did, it would be his father’s old one.

Thank you guys for letting me make all these movies over the years. I’m going to try to make more.
