During the promotion of Uncut Gems, Adam Sandler jokingly threatened to deliberately make a terrible movie if he didn’t receive an Oscar nomination for the Safdie brothers’ film, saying he’d do it just to get everyone’s attention. Hopefully, we won’t see that happen! Now, six years later, he’s aiming for awards consideration again with a new film, Jay Kelly, directed by Noah Baumbach and featuring acclaimed actors George Clooney and Laura Dern.
Clooney plays Jay Kelly, a famous actor who discovers how isolating his career has become. As a result, he spontaneously invites his manager, Ron (Sandler), and the rest of his staff on a trip to France with him. His French fans adore him, exclaiming, “When I look at you, I see my whole life!” as he reconnects with his history. Gazing out of a train window, he becomes thoughtful, “remembering things.” He shares with Ron, “It’s like a movie where I’m playing myself,” revealing his feelings about his life and career.

Ron seems skeptical of the Eat Pray Love trend, and it sounds like he’s also dealing with some frustration about his boss. He pointedly says, “I mean, you’re Jay Kelly, but I’m Jay Kelly, too.” A film featuring past Oscar winners, directed by a well-respected filmmaker, about the world of Hollywood? That generally sets it up for a good chance at success during awards season. Sandler might actually make a good movie this time around.
