Ad Vitam has an emotional meaning in Netflix’s new number 1 movie

In simple terms, the French action-thriller “Ad Vitam,” currently at the top spot on Netflix, tells the story of a man seeking his abducted wife. The title might seem straightforward, but within the movie’s context, it carries a surprisingly emotional resonance.

This past week has seen significant success for non-English Netflix productions. The second season of Squid Game continues to captivate millions, while Asura received critical acclaim, and Hound’s Hill piqued viewer interest due to its intriguing narrative.

Currently, there’s a fresh action film on the horizon titled Ad Vitam, reminiscent of the Taken series. The story revolves around Franck, a character portrayed by Guillaume Canet, who used to be an elite agent within France’s national police’s counter-terrorism unit, more famously known as GIGN.

The movie opens by showing that Franck has departed from the GIGN. He’s now preparing for a peaceful life with his expectant wife Léo (Stéphane Caillard). However, all goes awry when a gang of attackers invade their home and kidnap her. This situation compels him to employ his unique abilities to rescue her. Hereafter, some spoilers will be discussed!

What does Ad Vitam mean?

The phrase “Ad Vitam” is Latin for “For Life.” In the film, it serves as a motto on Franck’s police badge, a legacy left by his father before he passed away. This saying encapsulates the movie’s essence as Franck tirelessly works to safeguard the life of his spouse and child, ensuring their future together.

In the film’s storyline, that badge plays a crucial role. Before Léo was kidnapped, Franck spotted dried blood on it. Upon sending it for DNA testing, it exposed a sinister plot within the French government – specifically, those responsible for his partner’s death were government agents.

Clearly, Léo follows up on this clue, leading to his capture, as Frank’s adversaries aim to mute him.

By the finale, “life” reemerges as a significant theme once more. Eventually, Franck finds himself behind bars (but fear not, he’s eventually exonerated), where he uncovers two crucial pieces of information: Léo is thriving and safe… and she has given birth to their daughter. Thanks to him, they can now forge a life together, ensuring that the lives lost in the process were not lived in vain.
