„Absolutely disgusting.” Ubisoft’s new offer has triggered a strong reaction from unions

We previously discussed job cuts at Ubisoft, and the company indicated more were coming. They anticipate letting go of around 2400 employees by March 2028, and we’re now learning about additional planned reductions in staff.

  1. The company informed employees at its Paris headquarters that it wants 200 of them to resign.
  2. Ubisoft is trying to avoid laying people off and is suggesting that employees choose to leave on their own through a mutual agreement. This is done under a French law called Rupture Conventionnelle Collective, which covers things like severance packages and other support in these situations.
  3. Right now, about 1,100 people are employed at Ubisoft’s Paris headquarters, so the company wants to let go of nearly 20% of them.
  4. Ubisoft is saying this is just an idea for now, but it’s pretty much a given that if it doesn’t get the green light, they’ll go ahead with the usual layoffs. This recently happened at the company-owned Massive studio and Ubisoft Stockholm. There, too few people took up the offer, so the publisher laid off an additional 55 employees and subsequently closed Ubisoft Stockholm.

The union responds: “Absolutely disgusting”

The Solidaires union, which represents workers in the game production branches but not at the company’s main headquarters, quickly responded to the news. They recently organized a half-day strike to protest budget cuts and were eager to share their thoughts on the company’s new plans.

Okay, so my company is offering people a severance package – basically, they’re paying us to leave – and it’s happening really quickly after they told us things are about to get much worse around here next year. Honestly, for a lot of us, it feels like they’re trying to push us out, and it’s hard to say no to some financial security. It really rubs me the wrong way, and the union, Solidaires, thinks it’s a pretty awful tactic too.

Call for a general strike

This issue isn’t resolved. Unions representing Ubisoft workers in France and internationally are planning a three-day strike from February 10th to 12th.
