DC has been updating many of its heroes and villains for the new ‘Absolute Universe’ storyline. Fans have noticed one popular hero missing from ‘Absolute Batman,’ but a recent cover hint suggests they’ll be joining Batman in this dark version of the world soon.
A recent announcement about Absolute Batman #20 hinted at big changes, but many details about the issue’s plot were kept secret. The announcement only confirmed that a character will be lost after a significant fight, and a new character will arrive seeking revenge. It also mentioned that “more than one secret” will come to light. However, the cover art by Nick Dragotta, which is partially obscured, seems to offer more revealing clues.
The cover preview shows Absolute Batman standing in front of a large letter ‘R’ inside a circle. This circular design is similar to the emblem traditionally worn by Robin, hinting that the Boy Wonder will soon be part of the Absolute Universe series.
How Absolute Batman already foreshadowed Robin
Previous issues of the comic have hinted at Robin’s arrival. The series has established that Dick Grayson exists within this universe. He makes a quick appearance in Absolute Batman #9, shown as a paramedic working in Gotham City.
We also learned that Dick really disliked Batman, and Batman’s constant fighting with gangs was making Dick’s job much harder. The city ran out of ambulances and taxis, forcing Dick to even resort to hijacking a rickshaw just to get injured people to the hospital. Dick made another brief appearance in Absolute Batman #14, where he was again seen complaining about Batman while watching the news.
It’s currently unknown how Dick Grayson could become Robin in this version of the story. In fact, there’s not much to suggest he’ll even be Batman’s ally. It would be a surprising twist if the hunter in Absolute Batman #20 turned out to be Robin, and their target was Batman himself.
