Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Will Trent season 4, episode 7, “CALL PAUL.” Will Trent has a remarkable ability to deepen the emotional impact of its most heartbreaking moments. Unlike many other shows this TV season, Ramón Rodríguez’s series on ABC has aired consistently since January. This uninterrupted schedule not only provides fans with weekly episodes, but also allows the show to effectively build on its ongoing storylines and maintain a strong sense of continuity.
A major storyline throughout Will Trent has been the evolving relationship between Will and Angie. Considering their shared past, it wasn’t a shock when their connection turned romantic. However, the show recently ended that relationship by having Angie marry Seth, which was upsetting for many viewers. Now, season 4 of Will Trent adds another layer of disappointment.
Paul Campano’s Return Highlights The Severity Of Wilbur & Angie’s Split
Disney
Following the emotional season 4 finale of Will Trent where Angie and Seth tied the knot, ABC continues the season with a strong episode, “CALL PAUL.” This episode brings back Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Paul Campano, who hasn’t been seen since the first season. Seeing the former foster brothers reunite is heartwarming, though Paul’s return nearly throws Will and Faith’s current case off track.
However, the show cleverly uses Paul to intensify the pain Will and Angie feel about their separation. When they meet for dinner at Will’s house, Paul immediately notices Angie is pregnant and jumps to the conclusion that the baby is Will’s brother’s. Before anyone can say anything, Paul adds, “I knew it back when we were kids – Pee Pee Percy owes me two bucks!”
Will quickly clarifies that the baby isn’t his and that Angie is already married. The camera focuses on Paul, showing his initial curiosity turn to disappointment as he learns the news. His reaction highlights how upsetting this is for anyone who’s followed Will and Angie’s relationship. Paul always believed they were meant to be together and was thrilled at the thought of them starting a family, but it seems they won’t be able to make it work.
Why Will Trent Needed To Permanently Split Up Angie & Wilbur
While it’s sad to see Will and Angie separate as a couple, their split makes sense for the story. They clearly care deeply for each other, but their relationship has been heavily impacted by past trauma, making a healthy future together difficult.
The complicated, on-again, off-again romance between Angie and Will was a major part of the show Will Trent in its early seasons. Even after they broke up at the end of season two and started seeing other people, many viewers hoped they’d reconcile. However, Angie’s strong commitment to Seth – based on both her love for him and their pregnancy – makes it clear this time is different. The show also wisely avoids revisiting the same dramatic ups and downs of Will and Angie’s relationship, as repeating that storyline would feel stale.
Will Trent can finally move past the difficulties in his relationship with Angie and build a healthy connection with her. While romance isn’t in the cards, their deep affection for each other doesn’t have to be defined by it. They’ve always been like family, and it will be compelling to see how the show explores that dynamic going forward.
Can Will & Angie Still Get Back Together?
Now that Angie is happily married, it seems likely that Will Trent will continue to explore this dynamic for a while. While the show is known for its surprising twists, the writers probably won’t break them up soon. ABC seems committed to Angie’s marriage and wouldn’t want to reverse that decision quickly.
Whether Will and Angie will rekindle their romance in season 4 of Will Trent remains to be seen. A relationship can’t happen while she’s still married, as it would only worsen their already complicated history. Furthermore, starting a relationship through an affair would be a poor choice and make it hard for viewers to support them.
However, if Will Trent brings Sara Linton into the picture now, it would likely end any chance of him getting back together with Angie. In Karin Slaughter’s novels, Sara is ultimately Will’s true love, and while the TV show has made some changes to the story, this is a core plot point they shouldn’t skip over. Ultimately, it’s most important that Will and Angie find a way to have a stable and positive relationship after years of conflict.
