A24’s Undertone Trailer Delivers A Super Disturbing Audio Experience, And This Horror Movie Just Made My Must-See List For 2026

2023 was an incredible year for horror movies, with a strong new scary film seeming to come out every month. It’s tough to imagine 2026 topping that, but a few upcoming movies are already looking promising. Sam Raimi’s Send Help is coming out later this month, and after seeing the trailer for Ian Tuason’s undertone, I’m now really excited about that one too!

Premiering at last summer’s Fantasia International Film Festival and now distributed by A24, undertone is a new horror film that deserves attention from genre fans. Though it’s the debut feature from writer/director Tuason and doesn’t feature any major stars, the trailer is incredibly compelling. While the visuals are dark and intriguing, it’s the film’s sound design that truly stands out, and I’m eager to experience the full 85-minute movie.

Nina Kiri, famous for her role as Alma in The Handmaid’s Tale, plays Evy, a host of a paranormal podcast, in this new film. She’s the only character you actually see; all other characters are heard only as voices. Evy begins receiving audio files supposedly documenting a couple haunted in their home, and investigating these recordings leads to unforeseen and dangerous results after she moves to care for her ailing mother.

The trailer for Undertone is incredibly immersive from a sound standpoint. Even through my basic computer speakers, I felt surrounded by unsettling noises, hushed whispers, and a strangely cheerful rendition of “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep.” I can only imagine how truly terrifying – and amazing – it will be to experience the film in a theater with a full surround sound system. I wasn’t familiar with sound designers David Gertsman and Steph Copeland before, but this movie clearly demonstrates their talent.

I’m completely hooked, and I have great news! The movie, undertone, will be in theaters starting March 13th, as shown at the end of the trailer. If the full film is as good as this preview, I predict it will be considered one of the best horror movies of 2026.
