I’ve been following the news about Ari Aster’s latest film – you know, the director of Hereditary? It had a bit of a mixed reaction in cinemas earlier this year, but now it’s heading to streaming. It’s a really interesting neo-Western from A24, starring Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix. They play a sheriff and mayor in this small town, and the story revolves around a tense election back in May 2020. It sounds pretty gripping!
After playing in theaters on July 18th, the movie Eddington will be available to stream on HBO Max starting Friday, November 14th in the U.S. It will also air on the HBO channel Saturday, November 15th at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. This comes roughly three months after it became available to rent or buy digitally in mid-August.
Featuring Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, and Michael Ward, the film Eddington received mixed reviews. Critics gave it a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences scored it at 65%.
Graeme Guttmann gave the film Eddington a 6/10 rating in his review for ScreenRant. He appreciated how well the film portrayed the anxiety and tension of the COVID-19 pandemic, though he felt it could have delved deeper into its ideas. Guttmann wrote:
The film is often wildly funny, showcasing the writer and director’s talent for comedy, much like their previous work with Joaquin Phoenix. However, it sometimes feels a bit too obvious, touching on serious topics but not exploring them deeply enough.
The show Eddington sparked a lot of controversy because of how it dealt with conspiracy theories and politics. People on both sides of the political spectrum disagreed with some of its storytelling and how it was made, and much of this discussion happened online, particularly on social media.

The sharply divided reactions to the A24 film are evident in its box office numbers. While estimated to have cost around $25 million to make, Eddington only earned $13 million worldwide. This makes it Aster’s second-lowest-grossing film, surpassing only Beau is Afraid (2023), which earned $12.3 million.
This film was released during a busy year for Pedro Pascal, who is consistently appearing in popular movies and TV shows. It came out after the premieres of The Last of Us season 2 and Materialists (2025), and before The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). Pascal is also set to return as Reed Richards in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers: Doomsday next year.
Joaquin Phoenix’s new film comes after last year’s Joker: Folie à Deux, which didn’t do well with critics or audiences. Before that, he starred in Napoleon (2023), a film that also received mixed reactions. It’s currently unknown what Phoenix will work on next.
Despite disappointing ticket sales in theaters, strong viewership on demand and streaming isn’t expected to significantly change how people feel about ‘Eddington’. However, with its upcoming release on HBO Max, the film will reach a much wider audience, potentially sparking renewed discussion online.
