A24 Delays ‘Legend of Ochi’ Release After Director Loses House in L.A. Fires, Sundance Premiere on Schedule

The movie “The Legend of Ochi,” produced by A24, has postponed its initial cinema release due to filmmaker Isaiah Saxon’s house being destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires. However, the fantasy adventure will still make its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival as scheduled, with Saxon and the cast present for the opening in Park City.

I’ve got some exciting news to share! Instead of its initial release date on February 28th, “The Legend of Ochi” will now be premiering in theaters on April 25th. Before that, you can catch a sneak peek of it at Sundance on January 26th. Can’t wait to see it with all of you!

The movie, serving as Saxon’s first directorial effort, employs puppetry, animatronics, matte paintings, and 3D animation to narrate the tale of Yuri, a timid farm girl residing in an isolated Carpathian village, where she was brought up with a deep-rooted fear of the elusive ochi species. However, when Yuri stumbles upon a hurt baby ochi abandoned somewhere, she embarks on a journey to return him home. The breakout star from “News of the World”, Helena Zengel, takes on the role in “The Legend of Ochi,” joined by Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson, and Willem Dafoe in the cast.

Saxon crafted “The Legend of Ochi” at a cost of ten million dollars. Before this, he had produced short films through his company Encyclopedia Pictura and directed music videos for musicians like Grizzly Bear and Björk. He lived in Altadena before the wildfire broke out, and authorities are still working to control the blaze in Southern California.

In a tweet earlier this January, Saxon expressed that our home, the entire street, and most of our town are no more. The saying “Ashes to ashes, dust to dust” was used. He described Altadena as the finest place he has ever resided, a place that was enchanting, serene, and above all else, beautiful. It felt like it belonged to another era. Unfortunately, everything is now gone.

we lost our home, our whole street, most of our town. ashes to ashes dust to dust.
