As a seasoned gamer who has weathered countless apocalypses in various forms, I must say, Ndemic’s latest offering, After Inc., is a breath of fresh air. After years of simulating pandemics and insurgencies, it’s refreshing to see the developer take a more optimistic approach. The vibrant, painterly aesthetic is a welcome change from the harsh UI of Plague Inc. or the cold satellite-map style of Rebel Inc.
Ndemic Creations, the developer behind the popular game Plague Inc., has unexpectedly launched a follow-up title. Unlike its predecessor, which was a gloomy pandemic simulator, this new game focuses on a more optimistic theme: strategy for rebuilding after global destruction.
In the world of After Inc., the story unfolds following the zombie outbreak depicted in Plague Inc. Here, your mission is to oversee the survival and rebuilding of human civilization within the United Kingdom after such an apocalypse. A refreshing change from its predecessors, After Inc. presents a more optimistic tone. The visuals are vibrant and artistic, contrasting starkly with the grim UI of Plague Inc. or the distant satellite-map style of Rebel Inc., a game that focuses on quelling insurgencies in the past.
During an interview with Game File newsletter, game designer James Vaughn expressed that he aimed to create a more positive and uplifting game this time around. In each play session, you assume the role of a settlement’s leader, where you battle against zombies, search for resources, manage communal conflicts, and explore new technologies. Each gameplay scenario typically lasts approximately 20 minutes, with successful completion granting meta upgrades that impact future settlements.
After Inc. is currently priced at $2, matching the cost of Rebel Inc. and being $1 higher than Plague Inc. This price reduction is offered as a “special launch sale.” Ndemic Creations guarantees that there will be no temporary microtransactions in the game, meaning any purchases you make will remain accessible within the game permanently. The app store also assures updates for the game over an extended period. You can download After Inc. immediately from Google Play and the App Store. A PC version is expected to release next year.
During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, sales for Plague Inc. significantly increased. In response, the game’s developer chose to contribute $250,000 towards COVID-19 research and launched an expansion pack titled “The Cure” for free at release. This new addition focused more on combating diseases as opposed to spreading them.
