A Pirate Game Cursed To Development Hell Since 2010 Will Finally Release In May

Originally slated for release in 2010, the swashbuckling action-adventure game Captain Blood, which encountered delays during development, is now set to be unveiled on May 6.

In my eyes, Captain Blood harks back to the thrilling action-adventure games of the Xbox 360 era, where I embody a fearless pirate captain on a mission to rescue a captive beauty who has fallen into the clutches of wicked pirates. To achieve this goal, my character must engage in hand-to-hand combat, sword fights, and gunfights against anyone that dares to cross my path. Along the way, I encounter quick-time events, intense boss battles, and the nostalgic feel of action games from consoles like PS2 and Xbox 360 – a fitting nod to the gaming era that this swashbuckling saga originates from.

The creation of Captain Blood game is said to have started as early as 2003 when Russian developer Akella decided to adapt a novel by Rafael Sabatini into a video game. A preview of the game titled Captain Blood was initially shown at E3 2004, but development underwent several team changes and restarts before landing with publisher 1C Company around 2008. TopMob even got an early hands-on experience with Captain Blood around this period, expressing concerns that the game had been in development for quite some time already. Despite plans for a release by 2010, it was continually delayed and eventually never saw the light of day due to financial difficulties experienced by those involved in the project and legal complications related to the game.

After 2010, Captain Blood remained stalled in production limbo…until recently. In 2024, video game publisher SNEG Ltd. obtained the rights and started developing an official launch for this action-adventure game. Following a minor setback from late 2024 to 2025, we now have a confirmed release date. Although we’re unsure about the quality of the game, it’s astonishing that a game once thought doomed never to see the light of day is finally making its appearance.

On May 6th, the game titled “Captain Blood” will be released across various platforms – PC, Steam, Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. The price for this adventure is set at $25.
