Anthony Hopkins, the acclaimed actor known for films like The Silence of the Lambs and The Father, is going to be in a movie adapted from a popular online game. He’ll be joined by Stephen Graham, known for his role in Adolescence, in the film titled Ibelin.
Though World of Warcraft features in the movie, Ibelin primarily focuses on a man battling a muscle-weakening disease who finds solace and freedom within the game. Anthony Hopkins and Graham will star alongside Charlie Plummer, Toni Collette, Isabela Merced, and Maisy Stella. Morten Tyldum, known for the Oscar-nominated film The Imitation Game, will direct. The story is based on the true story of Mats Steen, and the film’s title comes from Steen’s in-game character name.
I’m really excited about this new movie! It’s based on the blog “Musings of Life” by Steen, and the story dives into the incredible World of Warcraft fandom that grew around him and his wonderfully messy, loving family. The screenplay is being written by Ilaria Bernardini (who worked on Citadel: Diana) and Hossein Amini, an Oscar nominee known for The Wings of the Dove. It’s being produced by a great team – Vendôme Pictures and Pathé, with Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi from Vendôme, Jérôme Seydoux from Pathé, and Tyldum and Guri Neby of Neby-Tyldum AS all involved.
Anthony Hopkins will be joined by Stephen Graham, fresh off winning three Emmys for the Netflix series Adolescence, a show he created and starred in. Graham also appears in the new Bruce Springsteen biopic, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, and is known for his roles in Peaky Blinders, The Irishman, and Rocketman. Hopkins’ other co-star, Christopher Plummer, recently appeared in Francis Lawrence’s The Long Walk, and has also starred in films like All the Money in the World and Lean on Pete.
Principal photography on Ibelin is expected to take place in Europe in 2026.
