A recent Razer ad on TikTok is sparking criticism for perpetuating sexist stereotypes in gaming. While intended to showcase the company’s noise-cancelling headphones, the ad relies on the harmful idea that women – who actually make up nearly half of all gamers – are excessively talkative.
A recent TikTok ad, highlighted by PC Gamer, shows a couple on a couch. The man is gaming with a headset, clearly bothered by the woman who is talking to him. He turns on the headset’s noise cancellation feature, instantly silencing her, and the ad displays the message: “Active Noise Cancellation: On, Drama: Off.” As of October 23rd, the ad is still available on TikTok.
Razer is known for creating accessories marketed towards women, so their new advertisement is surprising. While it may not be deliberately sexist, the ad reinforces traditional gender stereotypes and overlooks the many women who enjoy video games. Interestingly, a recent study showed that nearly as many women as men play video games.
The ad received mostly negative feedback, with many users expressing their disappointment and anger online. Some longtime customers stated they would no longer support Razer, while others even reported destroying Razer products. A major concern was perceived sexism in the ad, with users calling it “insane” and labeling Razer as “sexist” in comments on the ad and other Razer videos, according to PC Gamer.
TopMob has reached out to Razer for comment.
