It remains uncertain what future steps Inin Games and Ys Net may take regarding Shenmue 3, but there’s a chance it could be released on other platforms like Xbox and Switch. Since its launch in 2019, the game has been exclusive to PlayStation consoles as Sony contributed financially to the project.
2022 saw Yu Suzuki, the creator of Shenmue, express his intention to make Shenmue 4 more accessible if given the opportunity to develop it. Despite Shenmue 3 ending with a cliffhanger, Suzuki suggested that a sequel could tell an entirely new story without being tied to the events of that game. This year, enthusiasts of Shenmue bought a 15-second advertisement on a Times Square video billboard as part of their campaign for Shenmue 4. This effort momentarily made “Shenmue” trend on Twitter.
