Okay, so huge news for us Minecraft fans! Warner Bros. and Legendary just announced they’re making a second Minecraft movie! It’s currently scheduled to come out on July 23, 2027. That’s not too long after the live-action Zelda movie, so it’s going to be a good year for gaming adaptations!
If everything stays on track, a second Minecraft movie and a sequel to The Simpsons Movie are both expected to be released in theaters in July 2027.
It’s not surprising that a sequel is being made. The first movie, which came out in April 2025, was a huge success, earning over $950 million globally. It currently ranks as the second highest-grossing film based on a video game and the 69th highest-grossing movie of all time.
Shortly after the film came out in April, Warner Bros. executives strongly hinted at a sequel, stating it would happen as soon as a deal was officially agreed upon.
It’s still uncertain whether the original director, Jared Hess, will return, or if the main actors – Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen – will reprise their roles.

Hess shared with Deadline that he’d love to make a sequel, describing the world of Minecraft as vast and full of potential for new stories.
Man, looking back, we barely scratched the surface of what we wanted to do with the game. I’d absolutely love to make a sequel – it sounds like people are already talking about it, which is awesome! Just thinking about getting back into that world gets me hyped. Seeing how much the fans are enjoying it is amazing, especially after that little tease we put in the credits. They’re totally losing it, and it’s fantastic!
A follow-up movie might center around Alex, a character briefly shown at the film’s conclusion. According to Hess, Jack Black’s character, Steve, could also appear in the potential sequel.
News of a second Minecraft movie comes shortly after Warner Bros. leaders Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy renewed their contracts with the studio. While films like the first Minecraft Movie, Sinners, and Weapons were successful in 2025, the studio also experienced some disappointments in the last year, including Mickey 17, The Alto Knights, and Joker: Folie a Deux. Before De Luca and Abdy signed their extensions, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav was reportedly looking for potential replacements to head the studio.
