A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Showrunner Explains How Spinoff Will Avoid Game Of Thrones’ Final Season’s Problems

With the popularity of Game of Thrones continuing to rise, some viewers are concerned about the direction of the latest installment, but the show’s creator has assured fans that a clear plan is in place.

Premiering January 18th on HBO and HBO Max, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a series based on George R.R. Martin’s stories about a wandering knight named Dunk (Peter Claffey) and his young apprentice, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). While only three of these stories have been published so far, the show has already been renewed for a second season, meaning it will soon move beyond the available source material.

A major reason the final season of Game of Thrones was so controversial was that the show ran out of source material. Ira Parker, a showrunner for the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms spinoff, recently revealed on Reddit that continuing the story beyond season 3 carries risk, though perhaps less than before. The spinoff itself is planned to run for 12 to 15 seasons.

It’s already known that Martin shared outlines for twelve unfinished Dunk and Egg stories with Parker. Now, Parker explained how they plan to proceed. According to Parker, “We actually have a good idea of what happens after these three novellas, thanks to all the extra material Martin provided, which makes things a little safer… not completely safe, but less risky.”

However, Martin also explained that if they were ever able to write a fourth book, George R.R. Martin would be heavily involved. He told The New York Times in 2022 that he hadn’t been very involved with the final seasons of Game of Thrones. It’s also been reported that his next book, The Winds of Winter – the sixth in the A Song of Ice and Fire series – will be quite different from how the show ended.

Many viewers were disappointed with how Game of Thrones ended, feeling that characters acted out of line with their established personalities, and that shocking plot twists felt random and unearned. Some storylines also felt rushed due to the season being shorter. However, the upcoming Dunk and Egg series has a built-in advantage: its overall story is already known, and the creators have plans for future seasons, guided by George R.R. Martin’s vision.

Parker explained that his vision for the show – which received some subtle skepticism – is to tell the story throughout the entire lives of Dunk and Egg. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already hinted at their future roles in Westeros’ history. Because of its slower pace, this series is a significantly different and potentially more straightforward adaptation than other shows.

I’m really excited about season one of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms! It’s based on the first novella and mostly takes place during the Ashford tourney. I think focusing on such a specific time period is a smart move. It’ll allow the writers, like Parker, to really dig into the important themes and develop the story slowly and carefully. Hopefully, this approach will lead to a truly satisfying ending for the series!

The last two episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ first season will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on February 15th and 22nd, 2026.
