A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner confirms connection between Dunk and GOT legend

Ira Parker, the showrunner for Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has shared that a quick moment in Episode 5 subtly connects the character Duncan to a well-loved figure from Game of Thrones.

The fifth episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms featured a thrilling showdown, with Ser Duncan and his allies facing off against Prince Aerion’s team in the Trial of Seven.

The action was repeatedly broken up by a long flashback showing a young Dunk’s past. It revealed a sad story about someone he loved, and how he first met and began training with Ser Arlan.

Beyond filling in Dunk’s history, these scenes also include a hidden reference for dedicated Game of Thrones viewers, alluding to something author George R.R. Martin has mentioned before.

Dunk’s connection to Brienne of Tarth explained

Dunk Junior starts his life of crime by looting the bodies of fallen soldiers on a deserted battlefield. He hopes to use the stolen money to escape the poverty of Flea’s Bottom with his friend Rafe and find a way to the Free Cities.

As they journey back to King’s Landing, they follow the same path Brienne of Tarth traveled when Jamie Lannister tasked her with delivering a message to Sansa Stark.

Podrick Payne started serving as a squire, and in a Game of Thrones episode, he and his companion followed the same route as characters Dunk and Rafe in a story from the book A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

The connection between the characters was deliberate. Author George R.R. Martin has shared that Brienne is related to Dunk as a descendant, and showrunner Ira Parker mentioned to Business Insider that he enjoys the thought of these distant relatives meeting across different generations.

Interestingly, both scenes were filmed on the same stretch of road in Belfast, featuring the same trees and surroundings. Director Parker noted that while it’s a subtle detail, dedicated fans might notice the connection.
