The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has finished after just six episodes filled with humor, heartwarming moments, action, and even a bit of silliness. But don’t worry, fans! It’s likely the show will return soon to continue the story of Dunk and Egg’s adventures in Westeros.
Season 2 will likely diverge slightly from the original story. The Season 1 finale changes a minor detail from George R.R. Martin’s novella, The Hedge Knight, but this change could have significant consequences. Beyond that, the finale focuses on the characters’ sadness following Baelor Targaryen’s death, with both Dunk and Maekar feeling the loss, and Egg grieving a lost potential friendship with Dunk. Despite the sorrow, things ultimately improve for Dunk and his young squire.
Dunk and Maekar Feel the Heat After Baelor Targaryen’s Death in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
Some time has passed since the events of Episode 5, giving Dunk a chance to recover and think about how he ended up in this situation. Dunk feels responsible for Baelor’s death, a sentiment shared by most, except for Lyonel Baratheon, Egg, and Raymun Fossoway. Lyonel even dishonors Baelor’s memory, arguing that the prince was reckless because he was facing opponents who were under orders not to harm him.
Okay, so Lyonel offered Dunk a spot at Storm’s End – basically said he’d treat him like a brother. As a reader, knowing where their relationship eventually goes, it’s heartbreaking! It definitely doesn’t stay brotherly. So, it’s not a surprise Dunk politely refused. Honestly, the guy would rather sleep outside than live as a guest among lords and castles, and I totally get it!
He’s now likely to be the next ruler of the Iron Throne. His opinion of Dunk mirrors Maekar’s – he believes Baelor’s sacrifice wasn’t worth saving him. Baelor was expected to be a king who would improve Westeros, and his death extinguished any hope for a brighter future. Ultimately, Baelor’s death sparked the Targaryens’ decline, leading to Robert’s Rebellion and the events just before the story of Game of Thrones.
Dunk and Egg Head Off on a New Journey Together in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
Maekar feels deeply sorry for his past actions, much like Dunk. He admits, through tears, that some will believe he intended to harm his brother, even though it’s not true – a rumor he knows he’ll be haunted by forever. While not without flaws, Maekar demonstrates significant personal growth during his talks with Dunk. Realizing his failures as a father to his other sons, he asks Dunk if Egg can become his squire at Summerhall, hoping to do better this time. Unfortunately, Dunk refuses, which disappoints Egg.
When Daeron mentions Aerion was once a well-behaved child, Dunk understands he can’t let the same fate befall Egg. He agrees to Maekar’s proposal, with the condition that Egg travels with him throughout the realm, just as he did with Ser Arlan. Dunk believes that a life of luxury and privilege, like the one Daeron and Aerion experienced in castles, wouldn’t benefit Egg at all.
Maekar angrily rejects the offer, not out of arrogance, but because he’s desperate not to lose his last remaining son. However, Egg has a different idea. Just as Dunk is about to depart from Ashford, he bursts from the bushes, announcing that Maekar has agreed to his request. The story ends with Maekar desperately searching the Targaryen caravan, frantic to find his son – Egg has deceived him yet again.
How A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Sets Up Season 2
The first season ends by setting up future storylines. We learn about Ser Arlan’s unusual nickname, “Pennytree,” through a flashback. He earned the name by hammering a penny into an oak tree before going to war, and removing it upon his return. As a tribute to the old knight, Dunk repeats the tradition at Ashford.
Dunk isn’t facing battle, but he’s embarking on a solo journey into unfamiliar territory. The uncertainty of this new world feels as daunting to him as war, though he’s fortunate to have Egg with him. They’ll likely travel to Dorne first, mirroring their adventures in the original stories.
Egg’s deception opens up exciting possibilities for the story. Previously, Maekar and Egg’s family haven’t been very involved because they believed Egg was safe with Dunk and had a plan in case of trouble. Now that Maekar doesn’t know where Egg is, he might appear later to search for his son, potentially reigniting the conflict between the Targaryens and Dunk that seemed to be over. The only character unlikely to return is Aerion, as Maekar is sending him to Essos for several years.
The most touching scene shows Dunk and Egg riding together, with the spirit of Ser Arlan following them. As Ser Arlan rides off, it signifies him passing on his guidance to Dunk. Dunk has finally come to terms with the loss of his mentor, the man who showed him what it truly means to be a knight. While his time at Ashford wasn’t easy, Dunk made a lasting impact on history and began a story worth remembering – and a true knight always sees a story through to the end.
