The fourth episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms accidentally showed viewers how House of the Dragon will eventually end. This new series, based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, takes place between the events of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. Although the three shows don’t have many characters in common, it’s sometimes hard to avoid mentioning future events that become important historical moments later on.
For example, the fourth episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showed a key event in the history of the Targaryen family. This new spin-off series is more focused than the other Game of Thrones shows, telling the story of Ser Duncan (Peter Claffey), a wandering knight, and his young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who secretly comes from the Targaryen line.
In the newest installment, Dunk meets Egg’s brother, Daeron (Henry Ashton), who tells him about a dream he had involving Dunk and dragons. Daeron also explains that Targaryens used to be skilled dragon riders, but now there are no dragons left.
It’s strange to think about, but my ancestors, the Targaryens, used to control dragons. We were known as dragon masters! Now, all the dragons are gone, but somehow, we, the Targaryens, still exist. It’s a heavy thing to carry, knowing what we once were.

The dragons’ extinction in Westeros is a significant event in the history of the world, and it’s a major reason why A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has a different feel than House of the Dragon. House of the Dragon features many dragons, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has none.
It’s become widely known that the dragons’ extinction is closely tied to the Targaryen civil war depicted in House of the Dragon. By showing that all dragons eventually die, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms inadvertently gives away a major plot point for the upcoming third and fourth seasons of House of the Dragon.
As a huge fan, I’m really excited for Season 3 of House of the Dragon. There’s still so much of the Dance of the Dragons story left to tell! The show’s been building towards this, and Season 2 especially focused on getting more dragonriders into the mix. Now that’s all settled, we know what’s going to happen with those dragons, which is a bit of a relief and sets the stage for what’s to come.
Fans of Game of Thrones know the dragons eventually disappear from Westeros – and their surprising return was a key part of the original series thanks to Daenerys Targaryen. However, seeing this fate highlighted during House of the Dragon is a significant reveal for viewers of both shows.
How Do The Dragons Die in House of the Dragon?

As a huge fan eager to learn more about the Targaryen history between A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, I was thrilled to discover George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. It fills in all the backstory and explains exactly what happened to the dragons before the events in House of the Dragon, so you don’t have to wait for seasons three and four to get the full picture!
As shown in House of the Dragon, the Targaryen family ruled Westeros with unmatched strength, largely thanks to their dragons. After King Viserys dies, a major split forms within the family, and two potential heirs – Rhaenyra and Aegon – each gather forces to fight for the throne. (This Aegon is different from the Aegon featured in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.)
During the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of Dragons, both sides desperately sought to gather as much dragon strength as possible before fighting. Since dragons are nearly impossible to kill except by other dragons, most of the dozens of dragons sent into battle didn’t survive. This period of conflict also caused widespread resentment towards the Targaryens and their dragons, and some dragons were even killed by angry citizens.
The Targaryen civil war, and the conflicts surrounding it, drastically reduced the number of dragons in Westeros. What ultimately caused the remaining dragons to disappear isn’t fully known, but many believe the Maesters intentionally poisoned them, fearing the immense power dragons would give to any ruling family.
Despite being beloved by fans, all the dragons in House of the Dragon ultimately die, and, as shown in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, this will happen before the first spin-off series concludes. While it’s impossible to avoid spoilers in the connected world of Westeros, this isn’t the first time one Game of Thrones show has revealed events from another.
