A Handful of Marvel Rivals Characters Are Set for Big Nerfs After Player Feedback

As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer, I’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs when it comes to video game adaptations of our beloved superheroes. But with Marvel Rivals, I was genuinely impressed by its balance and depth… until I encountered the likes of Hela and Iron Fist.

Marvel Rivals offers an exciting lineup of well-known and lesser-appreciated Marvel heroes for gamers to battle it out in intense 6-versus-6 skirmishes. Yet, a handful of characters are causing chaos with the game’s equilibrium, leading to dissatisfaction among players who voice their concerns. Let’s explore these challenges and learn how NetEase intends to tackle them.

Many of the Marvel Rivals Characters Are Set for Big Nerfs After Player Feedback

In Marvel Rivals, each character has distinctive skills that differ in power and gameplay style, although they’re designed to be roughly even overall. For instance, Iron Man excels at long-range combat and masterfully manages space when skillfully positioned. However, he’s quite fragile, as his durability is minimal – a weakness that becomes evident if his jet boost isn’t available for emergency escapes.

Marvel Rivals appears to be quite evenly matched, which is impressive given the early stage of the game. However, it’s rather conspicuous that most tier lists I’ve encountered rank these characters in the S tier. Frankly, a bit of balancing, perhaps by toning them down slightly, wouldn’t hurt my feelings at all.

I’ve got to admit, it’s frustrating as a fan when not every character seems to have received the same level of balance in the game, and it’s causing quite a stir among us fans due to some heroes being in a “broken” state. Characters like Venom, Moon Knight, Jeff the Land Shark, and The Punisher are getting a lot of flak, but Hela and Iron Fist are the ones really causing a stir. They’re just not playing right, if you know what I mean.

In our Marvel Rivals review, we briefly touched upon Iron Fist. However, let’s delve further into this character. He boasts an extraordinary level of agility, with a triple jump that could be considered a quadruple one if you don’t count the initial leap. Add to that his dragon kick, propelling him across the battlefield, and his wall-running capabilities, and it’s clear he’s hard to pin down. To make matters worse, his attacks pack quite a punch, making him a formidable opponent in combat. This combination makes for a challenging matchup indeed.

Contrarily, Hela appears to be excessively powerful statistically rather than in terms of abilities. This deity of death is capable of obliterating Duelists with a single strike, leaving many players describing her as “overpowered.” In fact, I’ve witnessed matches where a skilled Hela player can dominate the entire game on their own unless the enemy team concentrates their efforts on taking her down.

The most challenging aspect was that Hela was causing issues even during the beta testing. NetEase attempted to balance her by reducing the health of her ultimate ability, making it difficult to defeat her while using it. However, they also boosted her base stats and granted a 15% damage increase for Season 0, which did not improve the situation. In other words, their efforts to fix Hela were not effective.

It’s hoped that NetEase takes the community’s feedback into account and reduces the power levels of certain characters, particularly by adjusting their numbers and cool-down times. For instance, Iron Fist might benefit from a cooldown reduction to maintain balance with his mobility. With the Season 1 update due in January, there’s optimism that these problems will finally be addressed – let’s just keep our fingers crossed they do.
