Borderlands 4 features a wealth of new content, including items, bosses, and characters. While returning players will recognize familiar faces, the game is also accessible for newcomers. You’ll quickly meet Arjay, a helpful character who rescues you from prison – essentially saving your life. Unfortunately, your time with Arjay is short-lived, as events soon separate you, and that’s where the main story truly begins.
Light spoilers about Arjay in Borderlands 4
At the start of the game, Arjay helps us learn the ropes and shows us how to use our weapons. He’s our initial guide, teaching us everything before Claptrap takes over. He’s a big fan of Vault Hunters! Unfortunately, we’re quickly captured by the main villain, the Timekeeper. Arjay bravely sacrifices himself to save us, allowing us to escape – and marking the true beginning of our adventure. Or so it seems… is Arjay’s story really over?
Heavy spoilers about Arjay in Borderlands 4
This isn’t truly the end of the story, but rather just the start. Arjay lives on and eventually becomes the enigmatic character we encounter later in the game. His hidden past is uncovered after the battle with The Timekeeper.
The Arjay we encounter near the game’s conclusion is drastically changed from the one who initially helped us. He’s been severely tortured, which has caused him to lose his sanity and wrongly believe Lilith is to blame for his pain. Because of this, he tries to prevent us from reaching the Vault.
There’s no way to finish our reunion without fighting and ultimately defeating him. Whether this will be our final confrontation remains unknown. Before he dies, he delivers a troubling warning: Vault Hunters will cause everything to be destroyed. This seems like a dark prediction, and considering what we later discover, it’s clear Arjay fought until the very end for what he believed was a better world, even if his methods were warped.
