A Far Cry TV series is in the works with It’s Always Sunny actor to star

The TV series based on the ‘Far Cry’ video game is officially happening, and Rob McElhenney, known for ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,’ will star in the first installment of what’s planned to be an anthology series. Details are below.

The popular video game series Far Cry is finally becoming a TV show. After over two decades, including six main games and several smaller titles, a live-action adaptation is now officially in development.

The Far Cry series, known for its exciting open-world gameplay, is a major success for Ubisoft, with over 50 million copies sold. Though some games in the series are more popular than others, they all consistently offer the wild and unpredictable action that fans expect from a Far Cry title.

While Far Cry started as a video game and had a brief foray into animation and a movie starring Til Schweiger, it’s primarily stayed in the gaming world. Now, the franchise is expanding into new areas, with comedian Rob Mac playing a key role.

Do we know when the Far Cry TV series will be out?

Okay, so about that Far Cry show… sadly, there’s no release date yet. It’s super early stages – FX and Ubisoft just made a deal, so I’m guessing we’re looking at a few years before the first season actually drops. I’m excited, but it’s gonna be a wait!

Okay, so the basic concept is there, which is awesome! But honestly, they’ve got a lot of pre-production stuff to do before they can even start filming. I’m talking about finding the right actors, picking out locations, and just all the behind-the-scenes work that takes ages. It’s going to be a while before we actually see anything filmed, it seems!

As such, we don’t expect to see the Far Cry series until 2027 at the absolute earliest.

Okay, so you know how things in Far Cry games always go completely off the rails? Well, it looks like the creators took that to heart! They’re making a new Far Cry series for Hulu, and it’s a completely fresh start – new location, new characters, and honestly, the kind of wild, unpredictable stuff that’ll probably give you nightmares. Seriously, you’ve been warned – it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!

Who’s involved with the Far Cry TV show? Cast and crew details

So far, they’ve only announced one actor for the show, and it’s pretty cool – he’s also helping to create it! As a gamer, I’m really excited to see what he brings to the table, both as a creator and in front of the camera.

Rob McElhenney, known for his roles in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Welcome to Wrexham, will not only star in the new project, but he’s also helping to create it.

Mac has always been a big fan of video games, and he’s even created a show about the industry – Apple TV’s Mythic Quest, which focuses on the people who make video games.

We don’t know yet if he’ll be the main character in Season 1, or if he’ll simply appear in a supporting role. It’s also uncertain whether he’ll be featured in future seasons – details are below.

Noah Hawley, the writer recently praised for his work on Alien: Earth, is joining the project. Known for his previous work on Fargo, he’s currently managing several television series, and will now also be developing a show based on Far Cry.

It’s hard to say who else might join the project at this point. To really feel like a Far Cry game, we need a memorable villain and some quirky characters to help along the way. We’ll share any news about the cast as soon as we have it.

What will the Far Cry series be about?

As we’ve heard, the Far Cry TV show will be an anthology series. This means each season will tell a completely new and separate story, instead of continuing one long narrative over multiple seasons.

Each season features a completely fresh set of characters and a new location. The series has already explored diverse settings, from imagined versions of Cuba to the African Sahara, and it seems to be aiming for that same variety going forward.

Noah Hawley explained that he enjoys the ‘Far Cry’ games because each one feels like a standalone story, similar to how each season of ‘Fargo’ explores a different take on a central idea.

It’s a dream come true to build a large-scale, evolving action series that consistently examines what it means to be human, all within a complicated and unpredictable world.

We don’t yet know if future seasons will adapt stories from the games, or if they’ll be entirely new. For now, we’ll have to wait and see what the show’s creators come up with.

Where is it streaming?

FX gave the green light for the first season on November 24, 2025. Once it’s finished, viewers in the U.S. will be able to watch the Far Cry series on Hulu. In most other countries, it will be available through Disney+.
