In September 2024, Nintendo unveiled their long-awaited standalone adventure for Princess Zelda from Hyrule, titled The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Upon its release, this game garnered mostly favorable reviews. To delve into the creation process, developers have been publishing a series called “Ask the Developer” on the Nintendo news site, which explores various aspects such as game mechanics, the Echoes system, and the role of Zelda as the main character.
After several months since its launch, an interview with the development team unveiled that Echoes of Wisdom shares a link with the classic SNES game Zelda: A Link to the Past. Since Grezzo, the co-developer for both games, has worked on remakes for other Zelda titles, and some similarities have been observed between the two games, this connection might not be unexpected, considering that players and fans have already noted several common elements between them.
In a recent interview on the Polish website naEkranie, game director Tomomi Sano, producer Eiji Aonuma, and Grezzo’s Satoshi Terada reflected on the development of Echoes of Wisdom, discussing Nintendo’s collaboration with Grezzo. The trio acknowledged that players and Zelda enthusiasts have observed similarities between the game’s map layout, top-down view, and artistic style with A Link to the Past.
It became clear that this wasn’t just a mere coincidence, as it emerged that Echoes of Wisdom was initially intended to be a sequel to the 1991 SNES game A Link to the Past; however, during development (which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic), there were significant alterations. One of the major shifts involved making Princess Zelda the main character and incorporating Echoes as a central gameplay mechanic, which is a crucial aspect emphasized throughout its narrative.
Sano elaborated on the resemblances between Echoes of Wisdom and A Link to the Past, pointing out that while the map might be one similarity, there are other parallels as well. He explained, “Initially, we designed the gameplay mechanics and certain locations. Afterward, when we had specific spots like water and forest areas, we decided on the types of creatures inhabiting them – Zoras in water regions and Deku Scrubs in forests. It so happens that Grezzo was involved with the remake of Majora’s Mask, where these same races appeared. We aimed to incorporate them in a manner consistent with our game.
