A Cyberpunk 2077 player just pulled 85fps using a vintage CRT monitor

A Cyberpunk 2077 player hit 85fps by running the game on a 25 year old CRT monitor.

Ever since its release, Cyberpunk 2077 has attracted players who love to experiment with its settings. Some maximize the graphics to create incredibly realistic scenes of Night City, while others intentionally add effects like static and distortion to give the game a retro, low-fidelity look.

The newest test took a completely different approach, using older technology like bulky glass screens, visible scan lines, and a motion clarity effect created by flickering images.

Night City goes full cathode ray

A Cyberpunk 2077 player shared a clip of how he got the game running at 85 FPS on 25 year old CRT.

The 46-second video shows a remarkably smooth demonstration: Night City speeds by on a large, old-fashioned screen, seamlessly transitioning from driving scenes to intense gun battles with street gangs.

Back when older TVs (CRTs) were common, you’d likely be enjoying games like God of War or Resident Evil 4 on a PlayStation 2 or original Xbox 360 – not experiencing the highly detailed graphics and realistic reflections you see in modern games today.

According to r/KobraKay87, the setup cleverly uses powerful, new hardware to run games while making it look like it’s being done on older technology. Specifically, they’re using a modern RTX 4090 graphics card and a Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor, but displaying the game on a 2000s Samsung Syncmaster 1200NF monitor.

The creator said they didn’t change the video’s colors, only added a bit of static and color distortion using a program called Reshade to give it an old-school look, like you’d see on a classic CRT television.

So, CD Projekt Red is really going all-out with the next Witcher game! They’re planning to add multiplayer, which is huge, and honestly, I’m crossing my fingers that Keanu Reeves will be back too – he was awesome in the first one!
