Given its status as one of the most renowned romance novel series ever penned, it’s not unforeseen that Sarah J. Maas’ “A Court of Thorns and Roses” could have been considered for a television adaptation at some point in time – but is this plan still in motion?
The popular book series “A Court of Thorns and Roses,” often referred to as “ACOTAR” by fans, has significantly impacted the genre known as “romantasy.” Launched with its first novel in 2015, the series now boasts four additional books, making it an ideal foundation for a fantasy television show.
For some time, it seemed like a portrayal of Maas’ universe might soon appear on Hulu. However, as development has slowed down significantly and there’s been minimal news about the project, doubts are starting to arise.
Now, reports suggest there’s been a major shift in the future for this series. So, what’s going on?
What’s happening with the A Court of Thorns and Roses TV series?
Based on various news outlets, it appears that the Hulu version of Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series might have been abandoned, but neither Hulu nor Disney has officially confirmed this yet.
The adaptation was given the go-ahead in 2021, starting its production phase at Hulu and Disney’s 20th Television in March of that same year. This series was a joint venture between author Maas and Ronald D. Moore, who is also known for creating Outlander.
Previously, Maas revealed the news in an Instagram post that has since been removed. In this post, she expressed, “Indeed, it’s official (and a big thank you to Josh for letting the cat out of the bag!): Ron Moore (renowned creator of Outlander and one of my creative role models) and I are joining forces to bring ACOTAR to life as a TV series on Hulu!
At present, I’m deeply engrossed in composing the pilot script together with Ron. There’s a wealth of exciting updates on the way as we work towards bringing this series to fruition, and it’s such a delight to finally discuss this! Keep an eye out for further details soon!
Following this point, there were no more advancements in the progressing show, as everything came to a standstill during the Writers’ and Actors’ strikes in 2023.
In November 2023, Moore said [via TVLine] the series was “still in development.”
We’ve created a few drafts, and at the moment, we’re in a holding pattern. It seems like everyone in town is on tenterhooks, eagerly anticipating if we secure actors to kick-start the project properly, though it’s all part of the ongoing creative process.
In February 2024, TVLine announced that the series was cancelled and would not be offered to any other networks or streaming platforms for broadcast.
The future of ACOTAR adaptation is uncertain
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve just learned some exciting news about my favorite show. Variety recently dropped a report stating that although the project is no longer actively being developed, it’s still in the pipeline. It seems Disney’s 20th Television holds the rights to the book series until summer 2025, so there’s a chance we might see more episodes in the future!

It became known in July 2024 that Moore had chosen to step away from the project, explaining through Entertainment Weekly that his departure was due to him leaving Disney and returning to Sony, as the ACOTAR series was initially based at 20th Century Television and Disney.
As a dedicated gaming enthusiast, I’m excitedly anticipating the future moves of the creative powerhouse, Ian F. Murray AKA Maas. The buzz is that he’s on a quest to find a new studio and platform, as the current agreement with Disney is nearing its end. Can’t wait to see what magical worlds he’ll bring to life next!
At the time of writing, no official comments have been made by Disney, Hulu, or Maas.
