Apparently, in Lithuania, the head of a TV station is in a legal fight with the government, and get this – a cat is literally the only thing preventing the government from taking over! It’s all over the internet, and honestly, it’s the most bizarre gaming-news-adjacent thing I’ve seen all week. Like, a cat is the key to free speech? You can’t make this stuff up!
The Lithuanian government is currently involved in a legal dispute with LRT, the country’s publicly funded national broadcaster.
Similar to America’s PBS, LRT was created as a public broadcaster.
In late 2025, LRT underwent an audit that revealed several issues. These included potential risks to employee benefits, a large number of paid broadcasts, and problems with how the organization purchased services and programs.
To fix the situation, the Lithuanian government is planning significant changes for LRT, which could include removing its current director, Monika Garbačiauskaitė-Budrienė.
Those who disagree with these changes believe the government is unfairly targeting Monika, and they introduced this new element hoping to save her job.
A cat just became the most powerful player in Lithuanian politics
Opponents of the light rail transit project are attempting to delay its progress by submitting over 100 amendments, some of which are unusual – one even references a pet cat.
Member of Parliament Agnė Širinskienė proposed a change stating that the head of LRT, Lithuania’s national broadcaster, can only be removed from their job if Širinskienė’s cat disapproves.
A black cat named Nuodėgulis, which means ‘charred coal’ in English, is becoming popular online because of a strange rule that was surprisingly approved by the government after a parliamentary vote.
The vote was originally planned for December 18th, but it’s likely to be delayed until January because the head of the parliament’s culture committee is currently in the hospital.
The proposed change related to cats will probably be rejected by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, who jokingly addressed the issue with the press.
He questioned the seriousness of the conversation, asking, “Are we debating an actual bill that’s landed on the president’s desk, or just joking around?” He seemed confused by the lighthearted tone surrounding what should be a serious matter.
This continues a recent trend of animals getting involved in politics. Earlier this year, the town of Somerville, Massachusetts, held its yearly “Bike Path Mayor” election, where fifty pets – including cats, dogs, a parrot, a guinea pig, a snake, and a tortoise – ran for office.
