Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good finishes the story begun in the hit Broadway musical. The film shows what happens after Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) discovers the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) isn’t who he seems – and is actually mistreating Animals. These events unfold alongside, and explain, the classic story of The Wizard of Oz.
I’m really excited about the cast of For Good! Alongside Cynthia Erivo and Jeff Goldblum, Ariana Grande is playing Glinda, and their dynamic with Elphaba is going to be fascinating. It’s heartbreaking knowing that, in Wicked, Glinda and Elphaba have this incredible connection, but ultimately end up on opposite sides due to their differing beliefs. It’s sad to see how Glinda gets manipulated by the Wizard in the end, becoming a tool in his plans.
Producer Marc Platt, who also oversaw the stage musical, explained that the first film doesn’t end with a traditional victory. Instead, it features a powerful moment of self-acceptance for Elphaba. She comes to terms with who she is and understands she must fight for what’s right, even if it’s difficult. That’s the only real triumph in the story.
Platt explained that the world in the second film has changed because of Elphaba’s decisions. The choices both girls made in the first film now have serious repercussions: Elphaba is forced to become a fugitive, while Glinda becomes the public face of the Wizard and Madame Morrible.
Platt explained that both Elphaba and Glinda face difficult consequences for their choices, and the overall story takes place in a more somber world. To highlight Elphaba’s loneliness and the sacrifices she makes, the filmmakers created a dark and unsettling atmosphere.
Platt explained that to truly understand the characters, you need to allow Elphaba to experience loneliness and betrayal, and let Glinda grapple with her own happiness and the consequences of her choices. He described the two films as complementary, each strong on its own, but incredibly powerful when viewed together.
Chu talked about how Elphaba’s decision to stand up for what she believed in affected her friendship with Glinda. He explained that taking a strong stance can be isolating, leading to fewer friends and more gossip.
Though they were once close, the two main characters spend much of For Good disagreeing, which drives the story forward and also affects the way The Wizard of Oz is seen. Wicked: For Good will be in theaters on November 21, 2025.
