Everyone is currently discussing the show Pluribus, and one of its writers recently shared thoughts on a growing fan theory about addiction.
Pluribus reunites Vince Gilligan, the co-creator of Better Call Saul, with Rhea Seehorn, an actress from that series, who stars as the main character, Carol Sturka.
Gordon Smith, another graduate of Saul, is also involved, working as a writer, director, and executive producer for the Apple TV show.
As audiences attempt to understand the goals of the alien force that’s taken over Earth, he’s been discussing the various fan theories circulating online. Be warned: this means spoilers follow.
Pluribus writer says addiction theory “harmonizes very strongly”
The creators of Pluribus haven’t revealed exactly what the AI is trying to achieve, but most believe it’s either a symbolic representation of the rise of artificial intelligence, or a commentary on the way we talk about politics today.
Smith clarifies that they don’t disagree with anyone’s interpretation of Pluribus. However, they acknowledge that current discussions about AI naturally connect to the way the ‘Others’ function within the story, given the present-day context.
There’s a lot of strong disagreement in politics right now, and many people feel things would improve if everyone could just agree on a common path forward.
A newer fan theory suggests Carol might be struggling with alcoholism. Evidence points to moments in Episode 1, like the breathalyzer test in her Range Rover, and Episode 3, where she mixes Xanax and vodka. Some fans believe the group is unintentionally acting as an intervention for her.
Smith explains that people often describe the show as being about addiction, and based on their personal experiences with those struggling with addiction, they agree with that assessment.
Everyone has their own private pain, and for me, Carol helps to numb that. The film ‘The Others’ shows what peace could look like, but it’s a troubled kind of peace. Ultimately, the story feels deeply connected to Carol, and that’s what it’s really about for me.
