NHL goalie Elvis Merzļikins is turning heads with his new mask, which features characters from the classic Sega video game Sonic the Hedgehog.
Merzļikins first used his new mask during warmups before the Blue Jackets’ game against Connor McDavid’s Edmonton Oilers.
The mask was a huge undertaking and was designed by artists Jordon Bourgeault and Chris Moniz.
Bourgeault described the concept as featuring Sonic and Knuckles designed to look like they jumped out of a movie, overlaid on a background inspired by classic 16-bit video games. A closer look reveals everything from the logos and chin area to the numbers and even the clouds are created using pixel art.

He explained that the design includes small, pixelated versions of Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Robotnik, and even the team’s stinger logo, giving it a classic 16-bit video game feel.
The game, called “Elvis The Goalie,” has a visual style similar to the classic “Sonic The Hedgehog” games, which adds to its appeal.

The Latvian goalie decided on a Sonic the Hedgehog-themed mask because his son is a big fan of the character.
Bourgeault explained that Elvis Presley’s son, a big fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, requested a design incorporating both the classic video game version of Sonic and the newer movie version, creating something enjoyable for fans of all ages within his family, the Merzlys.

The mask was a huge hit with the Blue Jackets’ netminder, who was impressed with the paint job.
“Thank you for making Knox’s dream come true!” the goalie praised the artist on Instagram.
Elvis Merzļikins will be debuting his new mask soon – he’s scheduled to wear it when the Blue Jackets play the Winnipeg Jets on November 18th.
