Now You See Me 3 Director Breaks Down How the Film ‘Rights the Wrong’ for Isla Fisher’s Henley Reeves

Bringing Isla Fisher back for the latest film wasn’t complicated. Director Ruben Fleischer explained that her return as Henley Reeves was simply about fixing the fact that she wasn’t in the second movie.

Fleischer told Entertainment Weekly he was especially eager to tie up loose ends from the previous two films and address questions fans had, such as what happened to the character Henley and why she wasn’t in the second movie. He felt it was crucial to bring Isla Fisher back to resolve that storyline.

According to Fisher, figuring out how to fix the issue proved tricky. There was a lot of debate about adding a certain element, and she said they had countless conversations about how to introduce her character to the world of the Four Horsemen.

Before her return to the big screen, Fisher wondered if her character, Henley, would be portrayed as a villain, and if she herself would be asked to play against type. Ultimately, Fisher and director Fleischer chose to base Henley’s story on aspects of the actress’s own life, rather than turning her into a bad guy.

Henley Found Herself Focusing On Her Family

The filmmaker explained they stayed true to reality when crafting the story. The actress couldn’t appear in the second movie because she was seven months pregnant when filming was scheduled to begin. Both the producers and the actress herself were deeply disappointed by having to leave her out of the 2016 sequel.

When we developed her history, we decided to make it realistic. She left her dangerous job because she needed to focus on raising her family and wanted a more peaceful life. Family became her top priority.

Fisher emphasized her strong desire to understand what happened to Henley. She also described her character as having a rebellious and energetic personality amongst the other magicians.

She performs all the really risky stunts and escapes, so, as I thought about the character, it struck me that she could offer a nurturing and stable presence to the male characters. That felt like the most effective way to utilize her within this story.

The latest installment introduces both new and returning characters, including Lizzy Caplan as Lula. With Now You See Me 4 officially confirmed and currently being written, fans can expect more thrilling heists.
