Balatro dev indefinitely postpones promised 1.1 update

Enthusiasts of the game Balatro who were eagerly waiting for the highly anticipated 1.1 update now face a longer wait, as developer LocalThunk has officially announced that it won’t be rolled out in 2025 as initially scheduled.

Initially, the lone programmer expressed regret for establishing a deadline in the first place, acknowledging that it resulted in excessive work pressure during and post-launch, ultimately leading to burnout. Following the release of Balatro 1.0 in February 2024, LocalThunk quickly rolled out an adjustment to maintain balance and subsequently introduced the mobile version, which became available later in the same year.

Following the burnout from releasing the mobile game Localthunk, they started taking a more relaxed approach to development in 2025. Instead of treating it as a full-time commitment, they opted to work on it as a leisure activity, dedicating just a few hours daily. This leisurely pace has kept the development of version 1.1 ongoing, but without a specific launch date set yet.

He expressed that he was working at a leisurely pace, but enjoyed it that way. He confessed his fondness for delving deep into intricate details, disliking the pressure to rush creatively. Prior to Balatro, he never established deadlines for his creative endeavors, and now recognizes its significance in his workflow.

Free update still planned

The developer, LocalThunk, has assured gamers that an upcoming update containing fresh content and modifications is on its way. This update will be accessible at no cost on all platforms after it’s fully prepared. The emphasis from LocalThunk is on ensuring a long-term approach to Balatro’s development, meaning the update will launch only when it’s completely ready.

I want to apologize now for not meeting the 2025 deadline I previously mentioned. However, rest assured that Balatro 1.1 will indeed be released, and while I can’t provide an exact new timeline just yet, what I can promise is that it will be completed when it’s ready.

On occasion, developers like Team Cherry, creators of Silksong, have delayed releasing a game or update so they can fully savor their work. In a recent interview, it was disclosed that the eagerly anticipated sequel required numerous years to develop due to them continually adding elements to the game that appealed to them.
