How DC’s Daily Planet Project Can Connect To Superman Without David Corenswet

DC Studios announced this week that they’re creating a new TV show centered around Jimmy Olsen (played by Skyler Gisondo), a character from the Superman universe. The show, titled DC Crime, will follow reporters from the Daily Planet as they investigate big superhero-related crimes – the first case will involve the villain Gorilla Grodd. However, neither Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) nor Clark Kent (David Corenswet) are currently planned to be in the series.

In James Gunn’s Superman film, Jimmy Olsen had a brief but important part in assisting Lois Lane with her investigation of Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). Although he wasn’t on screen for long, he made a strong impression, and many viewers were particularly interested in his connection with Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sampaio).

Rumors started this summer about a possible spin-off series focusing on Jimmy Olsen, as well as another starring the popular character Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi). While the new show, DC Crime, won’t feature Superman directly, it might still find ways to mention him or Clark Kent.

How DC Crime Could Still Have A Superman Presence

When DC Crime was first announced, the reports made it clear that Clark Kent and Lois Lane wouldn’t be in the story, though it didn’t say anything about Henry Cavill and Rachel Brosnahan not being involved at all. That means, technically, David Corenswet could still appear – he is playing Superman, after all!

Okay, so I’m really excited about this DC Crime show, especially since it’s gonna feature a big bad like Gorilla Grodd. It just feels right that a superhero would eventually show up to help out. Honestly, any of the Justice Gang – guys like Mister Terrific, the Green Lantern they’ve cast with Nathan Fillion, Hawkgirl played by Isabela Merced, or even Metamorpho with Anthony Carrigan – could fit. But, thinking about the story, Superman makes the most sense. It’d be cool if Clark Kent knew Jimmy Olsen was investigating, and that could be the reason he gets involved.

We still have many questions about the world of DC Crime, but a Daily Planet TV series following Jimmy Olsen’s investigation of a supervillain would feel incomplete without a cameo from at least one DC superhero. Even if Clark Kent isn’t a regular, bringing in his superhero identity, Superman, would be a fantastic way to tie the show into the larger DC movie universe.

How Clark Kent & Lois Lane Could Be Referenced In DC Crime

Whether Lois Lane and Clark Kent show up in the new DC series might depend on how much of the action happens at The Daily Planet. If the show features the newspaper often, it will need to explain their absence. Luckily, Superman already provided a good reason for why they might not be around.

The Superman movie doesn’t spend much time at The Daily Planet, and Clark and Lois are often off doing their own thing. A running gag in DC Crime could be Jimmy Olsen explaining that Lois is away reporting on another story, or that Clark’s location is unknown. This would be a fun way to acknowledge those characters while keeping the show’s focus on Jimmy.

It’s still very early in the making of DC Crime. The creators, Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault (known for American Vandal), might find a way to include David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane, even if it’s just with brief appearances. We’ll have to wait and see how the show develops to know for sure.
