As a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’ve noticed that while almost every movie has at least one amazing action scene, the truly standout films are the ones packed with several. Honestly, I think the movies with multiple incredible action sequences are often the best the MCU has to offer!
As a huge movie fan, I think a truly iconic action scene in the MCU needs to be something people will want to watch again and again. It could be an epic magical battle, a thrilling chase, incredible martial arts, or just a really exciting moment that connects with both the character and the audience. It’s all about replayability and that feeling of ‘wow!’
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Everyone will likely remember the incredible single-shot hallway fight from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It’s a standout moment showcasing James Gunn’s skill, as the Guardians team up to defeat wave after wave of enemies, all captured in one seamless take.
Every Guardian gets a chance to show off their skills, from Gamora’s impressive fighting to Nebula’s unsettling but effective recovery before she attacks. The scene is perfectly set to The Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Till Brooklyn,” and it’s arguably the song’s best use in a film.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has some memorable moments, including a lively escape from Orgocorp. However, the team’s initial meeting with the High Evolutionary really stands out. Seeing Groot and Star-Lord fighting side-by-side against his forces is a particularly impressive scene.
Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)
The movie Avengers: Age of Ultron immediately grabs your attention with a fantastic action sequence. We see the Avengers in action, working seamlessly together to recover Loki’s scepter – it’s a great example of their teamwork.
Despite some uneven moments, Avengers: Age of Ultron delivers incredibly exciting action. A key scene involves the Scarlet Witch manipulating the Hulk, causing him to go out of control. Tony Stark is forced to deploy the Hulkbuster armor in an attempt to stop him, resulting in a spectacularly explosive fight – one of the biggest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The final battle in Avengers: Age of Ultron, taking place in Sokovia, is also a highlight. It’s similar in scope to the Battle of New York, but with exciting new additions like Vision and the Maximoff twins, making it a truly impressive spectacle.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
The first Captain America movie was decent, but The Winter Soldier was a significant improvement in almost every way. The action kicks off immediately with a thrilling scene: Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D. board a tanker ship where he battles George Batroc, portrayed by a real mixed martial arts fighter.
The movie features a particularly impressive fight scene. The action doesn’t slow down, and later, a thrilling chase sequence unfolds as the Winter Soldier pursues Steve, Natasha, and Sam, eventually revealing Bucky’s true identity as the Winter Soldier.
Fans often point to the elevator fight as the most memorable action sequence. Captain America finds himself alone in a small elevator facing off against roughly a dozen S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and he impressively defeats them all. The scene is so well-known that it’s even referenced in Avengers: Endgame.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
The Spider-Man movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe are all excellent, but Spider-Man: No Way Home really stands out for its non-stop action. The film immediately throws you into the excitement with a battle between Peter Parker and Doctor Octopus.
The action truly kicks into high gear when Peter discovers Norman Osborn’s dark side. This revelation sparks a brutal fight throughout the building, with Norman relentlessly attacking Peter, smashing him through floors and laughing maniacally as he delivers each blow.
The most exciting part of Spider-Man: No Way Home is definitely seeing Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire team up. Fans were amazed watching the three Spider-Men work together to fight villains from their previous movies – it’s a thrilling and unforgettable experience.
Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings (2021)
It’s disappointing that Shang-Chi hasn’t appeared in anything since his first movie, particularly with his upcoming role in Avengers: Doomsday. While the character is great, the best part of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was definitely its exciting action.
Whenever Shang-Chi fights, the movie deliberately references classic martial arts films. His first fight, on a bus, is particularly well-done and stands out as one of the best action sequences in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The movie’s next action sequence takes place on a construction scaffold, raising the stakes as a fall could be fatal for Shang-Chi, his sister, and their friend. A particularly impressive fight occurs between Shang-Chi and his father, and that’s just one of many great battles throughout the film.
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
Adding Deadpool to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has delivered both hilarious comedy and exciting action. The movie kicks off with Deadpool searching for Wolverine, which quickly leads to a chaotic confrontation with the TVA – an encounter he handles with his signature brutal and over-the-top style.
But because it’s Deadpool, the violent scene was balanced with humor. He even broke into a dance to NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye,” which gained renewed popularity on TikTok after the movie’s release.
Wolverine definitely makes the movie more exciting. His fight with Deadpool, set to music from Grease inside a car, is fantastic, but seeing them team up to battle an army of Deadpools towards the end is even more impressive.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Everyone praises Taika Waititi for bringing humor and a unique style to Thor: Ragnarok, and rightfully so – it revitalized the series. But his innovative approach extended to the action sequences too, like the memorable shot of the camera tracking Mjölnir as Thor hurled it at the beginning of the film.
While that moment was pretty cool, it wasn’t truly memorable. The first scene that really stands out is the fight between Thor and Hulk on Sakaar. Fans had been waiting years to see Thor go up against Hulk, especially after a brief glimpse in The Avengers, and the actual fight definitely delivered on all expectations.
One of the most powerful scenes in the movie happens towards the end when Thor remembers his true power as the God of Thunder. He dramatically descends onto the bridge, surrounded by lightning, and begins a destructive rampage. Loki, Valkyrie, and Hulk each have their own impressive moments during this huge battle.
The Avengers (2012)
As the first movie to bring all of Marvel’s heroes together, The Avengers really needed to impress with its action sequences. It succeeded, starting with a fantastic scene when the team is flying on the Quinjet.
The Avengers first truly unite when a Quinjet comes under attack, manipulated by Loki through Hawkeye. The battle is chaotic – Hulk pursues Black Widow, Thor clashes with Hulk, and Captain America teams up with Iron Man to avert disaster. It’s a showcase of incredible action as the team struggles to work together.
However, the Battle of New York is truly the defining moment of the film. The Avengers team up to defend New York City from a massive attack by the Chitauri, and this incredible battle makes up most of the movie’s climax. While later Marvel films had even bigger moments, this battle was the most impressive thing the MCU had done up to that point.
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
While titled Captain America: Civil War, the movie feels more like a team-up Avengers film due to its large cast of characters. This allows for some truly impressive action sequences, like the exciting opening scene in Lagos where Captain America, Scarlet Witch, and others demonstrate their coordinated abilities.
The movie then really kicks into high gear with a thrilling chase that also introduces Black Panther. But the most memorable part of Captain America: Civil War is definitely the airport battle. It’s an incredibly epic fight with over a dozen of the heroes we love battling each other.
Most movies would end with such a dramatic showdown, but Captain America: Civil War keeps going. The reveal that Bucky killed Tony Stark’s parents leads to a heated fight between Bucky, Captain America, and Tony. The battle includes Bucky losing his arm, Captain America’s famous line, “I could do this all day,” and a powerful shot of Tony’s weapon striking Cap’s shield.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Avengers: Infinity War is packed with action, and features several memorable fight scenes. The movie quickly kicks into high gear with a battle between Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Wong, and Spider-Man against the Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian. Shortly after, Captain America, Falcon, and Black Widow jump into action to rescue Wanda and Vision.
The Guardians of the Galaxy eventually find Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man, and they all work together to beat Maw. But the most impressive action sequences actually happen at the same time, running parallel to each other.
The Avengers – including Captain America, Black Widow, and Black Panther – battle Thanos’ forces in Wakanda, and are later reinforced by the arrival of Thor, Rocket, and Groot. Simultaneously, Thanos clashes with the Guardians of the Galaxy and Iron Man on Titan. Both battles are visually stunning, with highlights like the magical duel between Doctor Strange and Thanos, and Thor’s dramatic entrance.
