Director Shawn Levy recently hinted that the new Star Wars: Starfighter project is particularly promising. It’s been six years since the last Star Wars film, The Rise of Skywalker, and the franchise hasn’t yet returned to theaters. Instead, Star Wars has mainly been developing stories for Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian, Andor, and Skeleton Crew.
Lucasfilm has faced difficulties getting a new Star Wars movie made, even though they’ve announced several possibilities. Films like Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, a planned movie starring Rey, and an untitled project from Taika Waititi have been stuck in development for some time, and it’s unclear whether they’ve been cancelled, delayed, or are still moving forward.
Fans can look forward to seeing The Mandalorian and Grogu on the big screen next year. However, a new Star Wars film planned for 2027, currently titled Starfighter, sounds even more promising. Director Levy recently hinted that this movie might finally give the franchise the epic cinematic feel it’s been lacking.

The new Star Wars film, Starfighter, was unveiled at Star Wars Celebration 2025. Its quick development is notable considering Lucasfilm’s inconsistent history with other planned movies. Set a few years after The Rise of Skywalker, the film features a talented cast including Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Aaron Pierre, and Mia Goth.
Considering the title, the movie will probably focus on exciting battles in space, fulfilling the expectations set by Rogue Squadron. To make that happen, the filmmakers need to be skilled at filming aerial action, and Lucasfilm has put together a team that’s up to the task.
In a recent interview with Collider, director Shawn Levy revealed he’s collaborating with Claudio Miranda, the cinematographer known for his work on Top Gun: Maverick. Miranda also has a strong background in films like Tron: Legacy and F1. Levy expressed his excitement about working with such a talented director of photography and explained how Miranda’s skills will enhance the look of their upcoming film, Starfighter.
As a huge movie fan, I was really excited about what he could bring to this Star Wars film. We wanted to do something visually fresh and make it a truly immersive experience – a real thrill ride. He’s proven he can do that, especially in movies like Top Gun: Maverick and F1. What I loved about his work in those films is how he doesn’t just show you the action, he makes you feel like you’re right there in the middle of it – in the cockpit, in the driver’s seat. It’s a completely subjective and engaging experience, and honestly, nobody does it quite like him. That’s the kind of power I was hoping to bring to Starfighter.
Levy’s statements are great news for Starfighter, because Star Wars really needs to recapture its sense of visual wonder. Though the Disney+ shows aren’t visually bad, the reliance on virtual production – specifically, ‘The Volume’ – has made them look somewhat flat and lacking the cinematic quality of the original films. This has diminished the grand, immersive experience that once made the Star Wars universe so special.
The first trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu looks promising, but it feels more like a typical Disney+ show than a big-screen movie. However, with Miranda’s experience on Starfighter, the film promises spectacular space battles and a grand scope that really needs to be seen in a theater.
It’s great news that Star Wars is coming back to the big screen, but it really needs to be a fantastic experience for moviegoers. F1 and Top Gun: Maverick showed us how to make truly impressive blockbusters, and it’s encouraging that the new Starfighter film will be shot by the same cinematographer who made those films so visually stunning.
