My Favorite Fantastic Four Easter Egg Needed Way More Screentime

Okay, let me tell you, as a longtime Marvel fan, I was thrilled to spot a fantastic Easter egg early in the new MCU film! It was a direct callback to the classic Fantastic Four: First Steps comic, and honestly? I wanted more of it. It was a perfect little moment, and I think they could have really leaned into it and given fans a longer look. It felt a little too brief, even for a quick nod.

Fantastic Four: First Steps takes place on Earth-828, a version of our world imagined as a retro-futuristic 1960s. The movie presents a new origin story for the Fantastic Four, who have already been working as superheroes for four years when the story begins.

Despite its flaws, the movie’s opening sequence, showcasing the team’s first adventures, is a highlight, and it even includes a clever nod to Marvel Comics fans.

Fantastic Four: First Steps Featured Two Sets Of Costumes

The new Fantastic Four movie prominently features the characters in white and blue costumes, both as their everyday outfits and as spacesuits. This color scheme fits the film’s 1960s setting.

The movie began with a look back at an old ABC Special, which showed the Fantastic Four wearing their very first costumes. For a quick moment, viewers saw them in the classic black and blue suits that were based on the original artwork by Jack Kirby, one of the team’s creators along with Stan Lee.

The team wore their vintage uniforms just twice in the video. The first time was during the battle with Giganto, which was styled after the cover of the original Fantastic Four #1 comic. They wore them again when they captured Mole Man after he attacked the Pan Am Building.

Although the scenes were very short, they were a welcome opportunity to see costumes that were perfectly true to the original comic books brought to life on screen.

The movie included some enjoyable references to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, as well as early Marvel Comics (known then as Timely Comics). However, the limited use of the original classic costumes felt like a wasted chance. It’s possible we would have seen more of those iconic suits if the montage hadn’t been trimmed – maybe in scenes with John Malkovich’s character, the Red Ghost, before he was ultimately removed from the film.

Will The Fantastic Four Have New Costumes In Avengers: Doomsday?

There’s been some talk about whether the Fantastic Four will get new costumes when they appear in the 2026 film, Avengers: Doomsday.

Fans speculate that the Fantastic Four might move away from their classic 1960s style and adopt a more contemporary look in current Marvel comics (Earth-616). This idea gained traction when photos circulated online showing gifts given to the crew of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. These gifts featured potential new costume designs for many of the film’s heroes, including the members of the First Family.

It’s logical that the Fantastic Four will get new costumes, considering Marvel Studios often updates superhero outfits with each new movie. As the team transitions from a classic era to a modern setting, a costume redesign feels natural. The MCU doesn’t usually keep superhero suits the same for very long, even if fans sometimes wish they would.

I have to say, seeing those black and blue Kirby suits in Fantastic Four: First Steps was a total highlight for me! It was such a cool Easter egg, a really clever way to acknowledge the character’s history, both in the Marvel movies and the original comics. It felt like a great tribute to everything that came before.

You can now watch Fantastic Four: First Steps on Disney+. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
