A man in Pennsylvania is recovering from a shotgun wound after one of his dogs unintentionally discharged the weapon, shooting him in the back, according to police.

According to police, a 53-year-old man accidentally shot himself while cleaning his shotgun. He had just set the gun down on his bed when it went off. Reports indicate his dog jumped onto the bed at the time. The man’s son was present and immediately called for help. Emergency crews found the man awake and transported him to Reading Hospital for surgery.
People magazine reports the shooting happened just after 11 p.m. on State Street, near the 300 block. The victim’s name hasn’t been released, and police haven’t provided an update on his condition. Officers also confirmed that several dogs were inside the house when the shooting occurred.
Dog accidentally shoots owner
I’m still trying to understand exactly what happened with the gun going off. Sergeant Schoone from the Shillington Police said they’re looking into whether the dog’s paw might have accidentally hit the trigger if the safety wasn’t on, or if there was a problem with the gun itself. It’s just so unclear right now.
Schoone emphasized the importance of always handling weapons as if they are loaded, following basic safety rules like keeping the weapon pointed in a safe direction and your finger off the trigger. He explained that the incident was a rare combination of unfortunate circumstances – being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Although a dog recently fired a gun by accident, it’s rare for pets to mishandle weapons. Earlier this year, a dog in Peru was celebrated for preventing a stick of dynamite from exploding near her family’s house.
