Christopher Nolan reveals the one thing that made him direct The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming movie, The Odyssey, is set to release in under a year, and he’s now shared the reason he decided to adapt this famous story for the big screen.

After the success of 2023’s Oppenheimer, many people wondered what the director would do next. Two popular ideas were a historical drama centered around vampires, and a modern update of the 1983 action movie Blue Thunder, which followed a helicopter pilot working for the Los Angeles Police Department.

However, these rumors turned out to be untrue. It was revealed that Nolan would instead be adapting Homer’s The Odyssey, the story of the Greek king Odysseus and his long journey home after the Trojan War.

The project boasts a stellar cast, featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as his son Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as his wife Penelope, and many others. Now, director Nolan has explained his reasons for choosing to adapt The Odyssey as his next film.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, director Christopher Nolan shared his vision for his upcoming film, The Odyssey. He hopes to create a movie with the same classic, practical effects style he admired in films by animator Ray Harryhausen.

Nolan explained that filmmakers are always searching for original ideas – things that haven’t been explored in movies yet.

Growing up, I loved classic fantasy films with amazing special effects, like those by Ray Harryhausen. But I always felt those kinds of stories could be even more impactful with a large budget and the scale of a modern Hollywood, IMAX production – something that would really make them feel believable and grand.

Ray Harryhausen is famous for his incredible stop-motion animation in beloved films like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts, and the 1981 version of Clash of the Titans.

As a huge fan, I learned that Christopher Nolan really went all out for this movie! They filmed for over 90 days and shot more than two million feet of film – he was absolutely committed to making everything feel as authentic as possible, and a lot of it was actually filmed right out on the ocean. It’s incredible how much effort went into getting it right!

I’ve spent the last four months filming on the ocean. We had the actors who play Odysseus’s crew actually out on the water, in the locations where the story takes place. And it’s been incredible – the sea is huge, sometimes scary, but also beautiful and surprisingly gentle, depending on the weather.

As a fan, what really struck me about this project was how much it focused on the sheer difficulty of those early voyages. It wasn’t just about discovery, but about the incredible risk people took stepping into the unknown, heading into a world no one had ever seen before. It felt so real and showed the courage it took to make that leap of faith.
