Valve unveiled several new devices this week, one of which resembles the classic Nintendo GameCube. While they showed off a lot, a new Steam Deck 2 wasn’t among them, and Valve has now shared the reason why they didn’t announce one.
After the recent hardware presentation, Steam engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais told IGN that a new version of the Steam Deck is planned, but the features they envision currently aren’t achievable with existing technology.
While the Steam Deck isn’t our main topic today, we’re definitely still planning for its future,” Griffais said. “We want to ensure any new version offers a significant performance boost that justifies it being sold as a separate device.”
According to Griffais, Valve isn’t simply aiming for a longer battery life with the Steam Deck 2 – although that was a common complaint in reviews of the original. They’re looking for a significant upgrade, something that truly makes the new device a worthy successor to the Steam Deck. To achieve this, the available computer chips need to be powerful enough to match Valve’s vision.
We’re aiming for a significant performance leap with the next Steam Deck, not just a small improvement in speed while maintaining the same battery life. We’ve been focusing on upcoming processor and design improvements to determine what that next version will be. Currently, there aren’t any available processors that would deliver the level of performance increase we’re looking for to create a truly next-generation Steam Deck experience.
This confirms previous statements from Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais about a potential Steam Deck 2. In an interview with The Verge last September, Griffais indicated that Valve is holding off on a new version until there’s a substantial leap in processing power, meaning we likely won’t see an upgraded Steam Deck before 2026.
We’re also careful not to prioritize performance gains if they drastically reduce battery life and power efficiency,” Griffais explained. “I don’t expect a major breakthrough in the next two years, but we’re constantly watching new developments in chip design and manufacturing to see what’s possible.
The company first released the Steam Deck in February 2022, and then in November 2023, they launched an updated version with a brighter OLED screen but the same overall performance. The next Steam Deck, often referred to as the Steam Deck 2, is expected to be significantly more powerful, assuming Valve can successfully implement the technology they’re aiming for.
Although a new Steam Deck is likely still some time off, Valve is preparing to release several other hardware products soon. The Steam Controller, Steam Frame, and Steam Machine are all expected to ship in early 2026. Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat has stated that keeping these products affordable is a top priority.
