9-1-1 Season 9 Fall Finale Review: The 118 Begins (Again) Without Bobby

As a big fan of 9-1-1, I have to say the first half of season 9 felt… different. It really marked the end of an era with Bobby Nash’s departure, and honestly, the show hasn’t been quite the same since Peter Krause left. I know people die on these first-responder shows, it’s part of the genre, but losing a central character like Bobby felt huge. It definitely left everyone wondering how the 118 would cope and where the show was even going after that major loss. Ryan Murphy’s show has always been a rollercoaster, but this felt like a real turning point.

After a major loss at the end of season 8, 9-1-1 is still finding its way in season 9. While the season has been uneven in quality, with a four-episode premiere that felt too long, there have been bright spots – particularly the inventive “Día de los Muertos” episode. Overall, the season 9 finale perfectly captures the show’s current state: a bit of a mixed bag.

9-1-1 Season 9, Episode 6, “Family History” Excels With Character Moments

ABC

Episode 6 of 9-1-1 season 9 is packed with drama – even more than usual. Beyond the typical multiple emergencies, like a finger injury at a family event and a death at a spa, the episode also features significant events that move the characters’ stories forward.

The latest episode of 9-1-1 features several intense storylines unfolding at once: Athena re-examines a past bullying incident, Chim decides it’s time to step up and fully take on leadership, Harry and Buck work together to pursue fire academy training, and Hen experiences a frightening medical emergency. While juggling these events with their regular emergency calls creates a complex narrative, it also allows for some really touching moments for the characters.

It’s understandably moving to see Chimney officially become captain, especially with that private moment with his team. The episode’s opening, where he’s wondering who should lead the 118, feels a bit strange though, now that he’s already stepped into the role. It’s good to finally see Athena included in the celebration, as she wasn’t there when the firehouse was renamed earlier in the season.

Angela Bassett’s character, Athena, has some really touching scenes with her children, which is great to see. This is especially meaningful considering she distanced herself from them before her dangerous space walk in the season 9 premiere of 9-1-1. It’s a little strange, though, that despite her bravery during the failed space mission, she didn’t receive any official recognition for her actions.

9-1-1 Season 9 Fall Finale Sets Up The True New Beginning For The Ryan Murphy Show

ABC

Okay, as a huge fan of 9-1-1, losing Bobby was rough. Seriously, it felt like a gut punch. For a while there, especially right after “Contagion” and even through the “Día de los Muertos” episode, his absence just hung over everything. But the season 9 finale really felt like a turning point. It’s like the show is hitting reset and starting fresh. Chimney stepping up as captain is awesome, and seeing Harry head to the Fire Academy is great too. What’s really interesting is that these new storylines – Chimney’s leadership, Harry’s training, even Hen’s potential health issues – aren’t about Bobby’s death, they’re their own separate arcs. It feels like a brand new chapter for the show, and I’m excited to see where they take it.

As a big fan, I’m cautiously optimistic about where 9-1-1 is headed. It’s still too soon to tell if these new storylines will really grab us, or if they’ll be enough to keep the show fresh for years to come. I’m especially interested in seeing how Harry and Buck’s relationship develops – we haven’t really seen Harry deal with his loss yet, and their connection feels important. Honestly, Harry and Eddie haven’t had much interaction this season, so I’m hoping for more of that too. Whatever happens, these plot threads definitely give the 118 some exciting potential for the next TV season or two.
