Google’s newest gaming AI is training on Goat Simulator 3 & No Man’s Sky

Google is developing its latest AI, called SIMA 2, by having it play games like Goat Simulator 3 and No Man’s Sky. This helps the AI learn how to move around and find solutions in virtual environments.

Okay, so AI is everywhere now, right? I mean, it’s not just sci-fi anymore. I use it all the time to double-check stuff I read online. And it’s doing way more than that – it’s helping build cars with robots and even starting to show up in the music I listen to. It’s pretty wild how much it’s impacting things!

Artificial intelligence has been a part of gaming for a while, helping with everything from designing levels to creating art. Now, AI is becoming a direct in-game assistant. For example, Microsoft’s Copilot on Xbox acts as a gaming coach, helping new players learn the ropes in games like Overwatch 2.

Google is now joining the trend with its DeepMind program. They’ve created SIMA 2, an adaptable AI agent, using games such as Goat Simulator 3 and No Man’s Sky as its training ground.

So, Google DeepMind has been showing off their new AI assistant – and it’s pretty wild! They’ve been having it play games and actually do stuff, like tackling really complicated tasks right while it’s playing. It’s like having a co-op partner who’s an AI!

MIT Technology Review recently demonstrated that the SIMA 2 bot can successfully follow instructions in the game Goat Simulator 3, like turning and entering buildings. Remarkably, it performs these actions smoothly and naturally.

The No Man’s Sky demo showed that when the AI was asked to enjoy flowers and ignore directions, it instantly began gathering them instead of following its assigned task at the workbench.

The first version of SIMA learned by playing Goat Simulator 3 and Valheim, but this new version is designed to handle more challenging situations. However, according to a report from MIT, it still has trouble with complicated tasks that take many steps and a significant amount of time.

Google explained that one of the goals of SIMA is to offer players a helpful teammate when they don’t have friends or other players to play with.

Okay, so this new AI from Gemini isn’t about to steal my high scores or anything. It’s definitely not ready to beat a game super fast, like speedrunners do. But honestly, it is getting better, which is kinda wild to think about.
