‘Makes The Bottom Of The Barrel Look Like Everest.’ Critics Have Seen Playdate, And They Aren’t Holding Back On Alan Ritchson And Kevin James’ Action Comedy

Alan Ritchson, best known for starring as the title character in Amazon Prime Video’s Reacher for three seasons (with a fourth on the way), is now in a new comedy called Playdate. He’s teamed up with Kevin James for this buddy comedy, and critics have already had a chance to see it. But is Playdate worth watching?

Alan Ritchson is famous for roles like Jack Reacher and Aquaman, but the movie Playdate lets him show off his funny side. With a great cast including Isla Fisher, Sarah Chalke, and Alan Tudyk, it sounds promising. However, John Serba at Decider points out some problems. He says the movie’s jokes and references seem geared towards very different age groups – appealing to 48-year-olds with its references, but using humor that feels more appropriate for 7-year-olds.

This movie is aggressively unpleasant. The dialogue is mostly crude jokes and overly simplistic explanations, delivered at an extremely loud volume. It attempts humor through shockingly inappropriate topics like torture and the exploitation of children. The filmmaking itself is shockingly poor – the editing, camera work, and storyline are all virtually nonexistent, making the movie incomprehensible. It’s far worse than the worst films out there.

Film critic Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter describes Playdate as a collection of tired, overused ideas rather than a compelling movie. He suggests it’s so unremarkable that it’s only suitable as something to have on in the background while doing chores like laundry.

The story is so confusing and overcomplicated that most people won’t be able to follow it even while doing simple tasks like laundry or managing money. Luckily, the game itself isn’t very good, so it won’t distract anyone from what they’re doing.

Jim Vorel from Paste magazine gave the movie a very low rating of 2 out of 10, calling it one of the most frustrating and awkward films he’s seen in over ten years of reviewing movies. His review in Paste states:

This movie is a truly awful combination of negativity and laziness, resulting in a pointless and unfunny addition to the world of streaming films. While it might not be the absolute worst movie ever made, it’s certainly the most worthless thing I’ve had to watch for work – and that’s saying something! ‘Playdate’ will make you think twice before watching another original streaming movie, because you risk ending up with something this bad. Simply put, it’s terrible.

In a review for AV Club, Matt Donato gave Playdate a D-, criticizing it as disrespectful to both its viewers and the comedy genre itself. He argues the film lacks energy and cleverness, and is essentially just a series of poorly executed events that barely qualify as a movie.

Some movies, like ‘Playdate,’ make you wonder why you even work in film, as they’re just a painful waste of time. Luke Greenfield’s action-comedy is shockingly bad, and while it makes jokes about extreme methods, the real struggle is actually watching it. It’s a truly unfunny and embarrassing addition to Prime Video, and even though it’s less than 90 minutes long, it feels like an endless ordeal.

Some critics have found redeeming qualities in the film. Nicholas Brooks from CBR gave Playdate a 6 out of 10, acknowledging some flaws but praising it as a welcome departure for Alan Ritchson, whose chemistry with Kevin James is a highlight. Brooks ultimately feels the film succeeds as a classic odd-couple comedy.

Playdate is a lighthearted action-comedy that mostly delivers on its promise of being short, fun, and funny. While not every joke hits the mark, the movie is still enjoyable, and the chemistry between Alan Ritchson and Kevin James is a definite highlight. They have great comedic timing together and could easily become one of the year’s best comedy pairings, even if this movie doesn’t become a blockbuster.

Despite a low 19% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers seem to enjoy Playdate much more, giving it a score of 52%. If you like Alan Ritchson, Kevin James, or lighthearted comedies you can watch at home, it might be worth checking out. Playdate is currently streaming on Prime Video.
